Travelpro vs Samsonite Carry-On: Maxlite 5 or Freeform?

Travelpro vs Samsonite for a carry-on comes down to a soft shell against a hard shell, and about an inch. The Travelpro Maxlite 5 lists 5.4 lb and a softside body; the Samsonite Freeform lists 6.5 lb and a hardside shell. Both list an overall size, with wheels and handles, above the 22 x 14 x 9 inches that Delta publishes. We read both makers' pages, Delta's carry-on page and both Amazon listings on 9 October 2026 and went through what independent testers found.

Quick answer
Checked on 9 October 2026. Pick the Travelpro Maxlite 5 if weight and outside pockets matter: it lists 5.4 lb, a 2 in expansion zipper, a lifetime limited warranty and a 46 L volume. Pick the Samsonite Freeform if you want a hard shell: it lists 6.5 lb, a limited 10-year global warranty and a TSA lock (per Pack Hacker). By the sizes the makers list, neither fits Delta's 22 x 14 x 9 in limit, so check your airline before you buy.

How we compared them
The NomadsToolsLab team read the Travelpro and Samsonite product pages and Delta's carry-on page end to end on 9 October 2026, and checked both Amazon pages with a US address. What surprised us: how close the two are, and that neither lists a size inside Delta's limit. Travelpro's page gives 23 x 14.5 x 9 in with wheels and handles, Samsonite's 23 x 15 x 10 in, against Delta's 22 x 14 x 9 in "including any handles or wheels". Little Loving Life made the same point in a September 2026 video built on the same pages.
Pack Hacker's Lauren tested the Freeform for three weeks and took it on two Delta flights: it fitted the bin once and was gate-checked on the second flight, which she says had nothing to do with its size. Away Together says its sizer compliance tool finds the Freeform fits only 3 percent of airline sizers worldwide. Owners of the Maxlite 5 in the videos we read mention the same two things: the weight and the wheels. Mrs. Suburbia, who has had hers for several years, says the wheels still work as well as when new.
Our conclusion: choose the shell first, then measure against your airline. Every number in the table comes from the makers' own pages.

The sizes are the makers' own and include wheels and carry handles. Travelpro lists the case itself at 21 x 14 x 9 in and says the bag has been tested in sizer bins for most major US airlines, adding that the bag may not meet airline limits when fully expanded. The Amazon listing for the Freeform shows conflicting dimensions, so we use the figures from Samsonite's own page.
1. Travelpro Maxlite 5 (soft)

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside Carry-On Spinner, 21-Inch
The Travelpro Maxlite 5 is a softside spinner. The Travelpro page lists an overall size of 23 x 14.5 x 9 in, a case size of 21 x 14 x 9 in, 5.4 lb and 46 L. It has a PowerScope Lite handle that locks at 38 in and 42.5 in, four 360-degree wheels, a DuraGuard-coated polyester shell that resists water and stains, an interior lining made from recycled bottles and 2 in of tapered expansion. Travelpro backs it with a limited lifetime warranty that covers wheels, zippers and handles, a 100-day trial with free return shipping on its own site, and a first-year promise to cover repair shipping and airline damage if you register within 120 days.
On 9 October 2026 the Amazon listing showed In Stock, Buy New with an Add to cart button, a third-party seller instead of Amazon itself, a 30-day refund or replacement and 3K+ bought in the past month. An owner of several years, Mrs. Suburbia, mentions the weight, the gel handle and wheels that still work as new.
2. Samsonite Freeform (hard)

Samsonite Freeform Hardside Carry-On Spinner
The Samsonite Freeform is a hardside spinner. Samsonite's page lists an overall size of 23 x 15 x 10 in, 6.5 lb and a limited 10-year global warranty, and describes a streamlined panel with an increased packing capacity. Pack Hacker, which used it for three weeks, describes a polypropylene shell that feels sturdy with a little flex, a TSA-approved lock, unbranded zippers without problems, a telescoping handle with two stops and smooth wheels. It has no outside pockets and one inch of expansion.
On 9 October 2026 the Amazon listing showed In Stock, Buy New with an Add to cart button, a third-party seller instead of Amazon itself, a 30-day refund or replacement and 2K+ bought in the past month. Pack Hacker notes that the inside is a deep bucket on one side and a zippered section on the other, and that corners are hard to use.

Will it fit the overhead bin?
Delta's carry-on page (read on 9 October 2026) says the combined length, width and height must not exceed 45 linear inches and that individual measurements may not exceed 22 x 14 x 9 in, including any handles or wheels. By the makers' overall sizes the Maxlite 5 adds up to 46.5 in and the Freeform to 48 in, which is our own arithmetic. Delta also says a flight attendant or gate agent can check a bag when overhead space runs short, which is what Pack Hacker met on one of her two flights.
Little Loving Life makes the point in a video built on the same maker pages: the 21 in on the label is not the full outside size, and the packed bag with bulges and attachments has to be measured with the handle down. It adds that Southwest publishes a larger limit of 24 x 16 x 10 in, which we did not read ourselves. Travelpro's own claim that the Maxlite 5 passed sizer tests does not change the written limit of any airline.

What testers found
Pack Hacker's Lauren used the Samsonite Freeform for three weeks in a video from January 2024. Besides the Delta flights, she says it picked up scuffs from one gate check but nothing broke, that it has no outside pockets so she kept the daily items in a personal item, and that packing it is awkward: gaps in the back corners, a small zippered section that gets hidden and an expansion zipper that adds one inch. She says the expansion is best kept for a checked bag.
Away Together tested twelve hardside carry-ons in May 2025 in a video it says is not sponsored. It put the Samsonite Freeform among the bags to avoid because its compliance tool found it fits only 3 percent of airline sizers worldwide. The same video praised a different model, the Travelpro Maxlite Air, for fitting sizers and weighing about five pounds; that is not the bag in this guide.

Trendy Treasure Hunter reviewed the Maxlite 5 in April 2025 and says it weighs 5.4 lb, rolls easily over carpet, has a deep passport pocket and a second front pocket and expands at an angle so it does not tip over. The reviewer advises marking a black bag with your name because the model is common. Mrs. Suburbia, who has owned hers for several years, calls it the most lightweight 21 in spinner and says the wheels still roll as well as when new.
Which one to pick
You want the lightest bag and outside pockets: the Travelpro Maxlite 5, at 5.4 lb. You prefer a hard shell that protects what is inside: the Samsonite Freeform, but measure it against your airline first and pack the daily items in a personal item. You fly Delta or another airline with a 22 x 14 x 9 in limit: neither bag fits by its listed overall size, so check the airline's own page or choose a smaller bag. You care most about the warranty: Travelpro lists a lifetime limited warranty against Samsonite's limited 10 years; both have conditions.
