VIOFO vs Vantrue: A229 Plus or Nexus 2X Dash Cam?

VIOFO vs Vantrue comes down to what the second camera should watch. The VIOFO A229 Plus 2CH points its second lens at the road behind, the Vantrue Nexus 2X (N2X) points it into the cabin with infrared lights. Both were read on 5 October 2026 straight from the maker pages, and both pages leave out one thing: where a dash cam may record at all.

Quick answer

Checked on 5 October 2026. Pick the VIOFO A229 Plus 2CH if you want the road ahead and behind covered: it lists 2K at 60 fps in front, 2K at 30 fps at the rear, and a 160 degree rear view. Pick the Vantrue N2X if you want a sharper front picture and an interior camera: it lists 2.7K (1944p) in front and a 1080p cabin camera with four infrared lights. Both need a hardwire kit for parking mode.

The NomadsToolsLab team read both makers' product pages end to end on 5 October 2026 and checked both Amazon pages with a US address. What surprised us: neither product page carries a legal notice, yet the data protection regulators in Austria and Germany describe dash cams as largely impermissible, and the VIOFO 2CH has no interior lens at all, because the interior camera belongs to its 3-camera model.

A YouTube owner, CKTechCheck, replaced a six-year-old pair of dash cams with the A229 Plus and put it through a month of driving. He found plates clearly readable when zoomed in up to about 15 feet in daylight, softening at 20 feet and blurring beyond, about 15 feet at night, and he grumbled about the one-minute default clip length and the extras VIOFO sells separately. For the Vantrue, Security Cam Reviews collects owner feedback and lists the infrared cabin camera as useful for rideshare drivers, with Wi-Fi reliability and SD card compatibility as the drawbacks it lists.

Our conclusion: these are close on the front camera, and the choice is the second lens. Every number in the table comes from the makers' own pages.

Both list a Sony STARVIS 2 sensor for the front camera. The VIOFO page also lists a 512 GB maximum card; the Vantrue page gives two different card limits, so check it before you buy a card.

On the VIOFO page the front camera records 2K (1440p) at 60 fps and the rear 2K at 30 fps, with a 140 degree view in front and 160 degrees behind. It lists Wi-Fi on 2.4 and 5 GHz, built-in GPS, a supercapacitor instead of a battery, cards up to 512 GB and an 18-month warranty. Parking mode is listed as supported (event detection, time-lapse or low bitrate recording), with the HK4 hardwire kit as an optional extra.

The owner in the video below liked the rich colors and wide dynamic range, and noted what costs extra: VIOFO sells the cable for a third camera only on its own site, and the circular polarizing filter and cable clips are not in the box.

2. Vantrue N2X: front and cabin

In short: A sharper 2.7K front camera and a 1080p cabin camera with infrared lights, which suits rides and rentals.

The Vantrue page lists 2.7K (1944p) in front at 30 fps or 1440p at 60 fps, a 1080p cabin camera with four infrared lights, 158 and 165 degree views, 5 GHz Wi-Fi and a supercapacitor power system. Parking mode runs in 24-hour modes including motion detection and low bitrate recording, but the page says the camera must be hardwired for it and that hardwire kits are sold separately. Warranty is listed as up to 18 months.

Security Cam Reviews says the cabin camera is most useful for rideshare drivers, that setup is easy, and that some owners hit unreliable Wi-Fi connections and SD card compatibility problems. A cabin camera also records the people in your car, which is a privacy question the VIOFO 2CH does not raise.

Dash cam rules differ by country

In short: Neither product page carries a legal notice. Regulators in Austria and Germany are strict, so check the country before you mount one.

Dash cam rules are not the same everywhere, and two official sources show how far apart they can be. The Austrian data protection authority says on its photo and video FAQ that dash cams are as a rule not permitted, because most common products film other road users beyond what is allowed, and that only short, incident-based recordings have been judged acceptable in individual cases.

In Germany, the data protection conference of the federal and state authorities published a position paper in April 2019 calling the use of dash cams largely impermissible from a data protection view ("kaum zulässig"). These are the regulators' positions, not legal advice, and they depend on how you record, what you keep and whether you share it. If you drive through Austria or Germany in a van or a rental car, read the local rules before you mount a camera, and think twice about a cabin camera.

Which one to pick

In short: Want to see what happens behind you: VIOFO. Want to see inside the car: Vantrue.

Pick the VIOFO A229 Plus 2CH if your worry is the car behind you and a parking scrape you will not see. It lists 2K on both cameras and keeps the interior out of the picture. Get yours on Amazon

Pick the Vantrue N2X if you drive for rides or rent out a car and want the cabin on record, and you value the 2.7K front picture. Check the rules for cabin recording first. Get yours on Amazon
