Peak Design vs Nomatic comes down to how you pack: the Peak Design Travel Backpack 30L opens from the back like a clamshell and lists 27 to 33 L at 1.44 kg, while the NOMATIC Travel Pack lists 20 to 30 L at 4.1 lb with 22 pockets and a fold-down laptop compartment. We read both makers' pages and four Amazon listings on 9 October 2026, and compare the two, with the bigger Peak Design 45L and NOMATIC 40L further down.

How we compared them

The NomadsToolsLab team read the Peak Design and NOMATIC product pages end to end on 9 October 2026 and checked all four Amazon pages with a US address. What surprised us: on the makers' own numbers the NOMATIC is the heavier pack, 4.1 lb against 3.17 lb, even though it starts at the smaller volume (20 L against 27 L).

Testers at Pack Hacker scored the Peak Design 30L 8.9 out of 10 and the NOMATIC Travel Pack 6.8 out of 10. Their NOMATIC review covers the August 2019 revision and says the shoulder straps are thin on padding when the pack is loaded to 30 L, so we treat it as a lead and not a verdict. Amazon buyers, as Amazon summarizes their reviews, praise the Peak Design for storage and build but are split on fit and price, and praise the NOMATIC for organization with mixed feedback on durability and zippers.

Every number in the table comes from the makers' own pages.

The Travel Backpack 30L is described by Peak Design as a rugged, expandable daypack for shorter travel and everyday carry. A rear hatch gives total access for packing, an enlarged top pocket holds keys, glasses and a passport, and the weatherproof #10 UltraZip is rated by the maker for decades of use. The shell is 100% recycled 400D nylon canvas with a 900D bottom liner, and the straps tuck away. Peak Design sells an optional hip belt for it.

Testers at Pack Hacker like the clean compression and the structured sides, and note that the main compartment's zippered mesh pockets are hard to get at and the hook-on sternum strap is not as simple as they would like. Peak Design's own video description says the 30L fits its camera cubes only in the expanded form. The Amazon listing we read is shipped by Amazon and sold by Peak Design.

2. NOMATIC Travel Pack: the pocket pack

In short: NOMATIC lists 20 L expanding to 30 L, 4.1 lb, 22 pockets and a laptop compartment that folds down for airport security.

The Travel Pack 20L is described by NOMATIC as an expandable 20 to 30 L backpack that converts to briefcase carry. It lists a perimeter zipper that opens the bag flat, a TSA-ready laptop and tablet compartment, magnetic water-bottle pockets, a hidden pocket and RFID-safe storage. The pack comes in a 14 L size too, if you want less.

Pack Hacker, testing the August 2019 revision for three weeks, liked the clean look and the magnetic pockets and found the harness uncomfortable when the bag is loaded, the internal organization hard to use fully and the tarpaulin prone to scuffs. Amazon buyers are split on durability and zippers. NOMATIC says every bag has a lifetime warranty against defects, and the listing we read is shipped by Amazon and sold by NOMATIC.

From the road: After enough years on the road you realize you don't need most of it, so it kept getting smaller. These days it's: toothbrush, basic hygiene and grooming stuff, a couple of medicines, a few pairs of underwear and shirts, one thick sweater for when it gets cold, socks, an extra pair of shoes, slippers, chargers, laptop. That's it.

Also worth a look: the bigger ones

In short: If 30 L is too small: the Peak Design 45L and the NOMATIC Travel Bag 40L are the bigger siblings.

The 45L is the pack the 30L is modelled on. Peak Design says it is approved for international carry-on in its standard form (35 L), and expands to 45 L. On Peak Design's own store the black 45L showed as out of stock on 9 October with a restock estimate of 2 to 4 weeks, while the Amazon listing was in stock.

The NOMATIC Travel Bag 40L converts from a duffel to a backpack and lists removable waist straps, a laundry bag, shoe storage and 12 internal pockets. NOMATIC pitches it for a 3 to 7 day trip and says it is carry-on size, designed to fit in overhead bins.

Comfort, weight and carry-on

In short: Pack Hacker rates the Peak Design harness well and the NOMATIC harness as thin when loaded. Check your airline limit for either.

Pack Hacker says the Peak Design 30L has thick, dense shoulder straps anchored on rivets so they swivel, and it likes the aluminum hardware. For the NOMATIC Travel Pack it says the straps are mediocre, with padding that is not very dense, which matters more when you expand the pack to 30 L and load it heavy. Their NOMATIC review is of the 2019 revision, and NOMATIC lists the same 4.1 lb weight today, but check recent owner reviews before you decide.

Both makers say the packs meet carry-on rules, and both are for people who carry a laptop. Read your airline's limit before you fly, and if you carry a laptop and a camera see our guides to power banks for laptops and backing up photos while traveling.

Which one to pick

In short: Peak Design for open, flexible and light. NOMATIC for organized and pocket-rich.

Pick the Peak Design 30L if you carry a camera or a changing load, want the back to open flat and want the lighter pack on the makers' numbers. Amazon buyers are split on whether it is worth the price.

Pick the NOMATIC Travel Pack if you carry lots of small things (cables, documents, chargers) and want a fixed place for each, and the shoulder straps feel right when the pack is full.

Pick a bigger one if 30 L is not enough for a week: the Peak Design 45L for a backpack, the NOMATIC 40L if you like a duffel that converts.
