Osprey Farpoint vs Fairview 40: Which Travel Pack Fits You?

Osprey Farpoint vs Fairview is a choice of fit, not of features: Osprey lists the same 40 L volume, the same 55 x 35 x 23 cm size and the same 7 to 16 kg load range for both packs. The Farpoint is cut for men, the Fairview for women, and each has a stowaway harness and a suitcase-style front panel. We read both Osprey product pages and both Amazon listings on 9 October 2026, and the quick answer below tells you which to pick.

Quick answer

Checked on 9 October 2026. Choose the Farpoint 40 if you want Osprey's men's fit. Choose the Fairview 40 if you want the women's fit. Everything else Osprey lists is the same on both: 40 L, a laptop sleeve for most laptops up to 16 inches, lockable zipper sliders and a harness that zips away. The weights differ by 10 g.

How we compared them

The NomadsToolsLab team read the Osprey product pages for both packs end to end on 9 October 2026 and checked both Amazon pages with a US address. What surprised us: Osprey lists identical volume, dimensions, load range and fabric for the two, and the weights differ by 10 g (1.48 kg against 1.47 kg). So the real difference is the cut of the harness, hipbelt and back panel, and how it sits on your body.

Sheree Hooker at Southeast Asia Backpacker bought her own Fairview 40 and used it for more than a year in South America and Europe. She likes the suitcase-style opening and the durability, and she says the men's and women's split is not strict: a petite man may fit the Fairview better. The author of Indie Traveller used the Farpoint 40 as his main bag for two years of round-the-world travel and says the Fairview has the same features. Reviews of the new Amazon listings are still few (79 and 63 ratings), so we lean on the testers more than on the stars.

Every number in the table comes from Osprey's own pages.

Osprey Farpoint vs Fairview at a glance

In short: Same pack, two fits. The Farpoint carries the men's cut, the Fairview the women's cut, and Osprey lists matching numbers for the rest.

Osprey puts the choice in one sentence on its Farpoint and Fairview page: "Choose Farpoint for a men's fit or Fairview for a women's fit." Both pages list the same compression, pockets and toiletry pocket, so the table is short on purpose.

1. Osprey Farpoint 40: the men's fit

In short: Osprey's men's fit: 40 L, 1.48 kg, a load-lifting LightWire frame and a laptop sleeve for most laptops up to 16 inches.

The Farpoint 40 is described by Osprey as backpacking design (a breathable, adjustable fit and a load-lifting LightWire frame) with travel conveniences added: easy-slide zippers, an external toiletry pocket and a laptop sleeve. The page lists lockable sliders on the main zipper, WingJacket compression with fabric sidewalls, two internal compression straps and an internal front-flap zippered mesh pocket. The main fabric is 100% recycled 210D nylon with a DWR finish made without PFAS.

The harness, hipbelt and back panel zip away, so the pack travels like a duffel when you check it. The back panel is mesh-covered ridged foam and the page names a crossbody hipbelt. The listing we read on Amazon is shipped by Amazon and sold by a third-party seller, so ask that seller how the Osprey guarantee applies before you rely on it.

2. Osprey Fairview 40: the women's fit

In short: Osprey's women's fit: the same 40 L and the same features, 1.47 kg, with a women's-specific harness and hipbelt.

The Fairview 40 uses the same description as the Farpoint, with one change: "a breathable, women's-specific fit." Its Osprey specs list the same 40 L volume, the same 55 x 35 x 23 cm size, the same 7 to 16 kg load range and the same laptop sleeve. The Amazon listing we read is sold by Amazon.com and says the harness has an adjustable torso length and a women's-specific fit.

Both packs are compatible with the Farpoint/Fairview Travel Daypack, which Osprey sells separately. Osprey's product tour also lists the series in 55 and 70 L, if 40 L is too small for you.

What is the same on both packs

In short: Suitcase-style access, a zip-away harness, compression and a lifetime repair promise are on both.

Osprey describes the series as having "suitcase-style access," comfortable carry systems and smart storage. In practice that means the main compartment opens through a large front panel, so you pack it like a case and not like a sack. The pages show Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee: Osprey says it will repair any damage or defect for any reason free of charge, and replace the pack if it cannot repair it.

Both packs also have an adjustable torso length. Osprey's product pages do not give a torso range in numbers, so use Osprey's size and fit guide to measure yourself, or try the pack on a shop floor before you buy.

From the road: I've carried a lot of backpacks over the years, eleven of those years were spent backpacking through South America. In the beginning my bag was packed full. After enough years on the road you realize you don't need most of it, so it kept getting smaller. These days it's: toothbrush, basic hygiene and grooming stuff, a couple of medicines, a few pairs of underwear and shirts, one thick sweater for when it gets cold, socks, an extra pair of shoes, slippers, chargers, laptop. That's it.

Carry-on: what Osprey says and what to check

In short: Osprey says the packs are sized for domestic carry-on rules. Your airline has the last word.

Check your airline size limit before you fly: low-cost carriers can be stricter than Osprey says. Photo: Preston A Larimer on Unsplash

Osprey's pages say the pack is "sized to meet domestic carry-on requirements," and the Amazon listing says it meets most carry-on size requirements and to always check with your airline. The 55 x 35 x 23 cm size is the number to hold against your airline's limit. Low-cost carriers and some regional airlines set their own limits, so measure the pack when it is full, not empty, and check the airline page for your flight.

These are travel packs, not hiking packs. Osprey sells separate trek versions of the series with a more adjustable suspension, and the Southeast Asia Backpacker author says the Fairview 40 is not ideal for hiking. If your trip is airports, trains and hostels, the 40 L fits the job. If it is a week on a trail, look at the trek versions.

Which one to pick

In short: Pick the cut that fits your body. If you are between the two, try both.

Pick the Farpoint 40 if you want Osprey's men's-specific fit, or if you are a woman with broad shoulders: the Southeast Asia Backpacker author says some women prefer it.

Pick the Fairview 40 if you want the women's-specific harness and hipbelt, or if you are a smaller-framed man. The same author says a petite man may fit the Fairview better. Osprey designs the packs by body shape, so the label is a guide and not a rule.

Pick by availability and price if the fit is the same for you. The specs match, so use the two buttons above to compare what each listing costs today.
