AirTag vs Chipolo comes down to your phone. Apple's AirTag works only with an iPhone or iPad and adds Ultra Wideband arrows that point you to the exact spot, while the Chipolo POP works with Apple Find My on an iPhone or Google Find Hub on Android, one network at a time, and lists a 120 dB alarm. We read Apple's and Chipolo's product pages and both Amazon listings on 9 October 2026.

Quick answer
Checked on 9 October 2026. Choose the AirTag if everyone in your family uses an iPhone and you want Precision Finding that shows the exact distance and direction. Choose the Chipolo POP if you want a louder tag, a choice of colors, Android support or an older iPhone: Chipolo asks for iOS 14.5, while Apple lists iOS 26 for the AirTag.

How we compared them
The NomadsToolsLab team read Apple's AirTag pages and Chipolo's POP page end to end on 9 October 2026 and checked both Amazon pages with a US address. What surprised us: there is no "AirTag 2" on Apple's site, only one AirTag (Amazon calls it the 2nd generation), and the POP's listed 300 ft range was about 35 feet in the Tom's Guide test.
Tom's Guide called the POP a great Android alternative with a very loud alarm and no Ultra Wideband. MacRumors says in the description of its February 2026 video that it tested the new AirTag side by side with the first generation and that the difference is real. Amazon buyers, as Amazon summarizes their reviews, praise the AirTag's precision finding and setup, and are split on the POP's connectivity and its call-your-phone feature on iPhone.
Every number in the table comes from the makers' own pages.

AirTag vs Chipolo at a glance
| AirTag | Chipolo POP | |
|---|---|---|
| Works with | AirTag: iPhone and iPad through Apple Find My | Chipolo POP: iPhone through Apple Find My or Android through Google Find Hub, one network at a time |
| Minimum software | AirTag: iOS 26.0 or iPadOS 26.0 | Chipolo POP: iOS 14.5 or later, or Android 9 or later with Google Play Services |
| Close-up finding | AirTag: Precision Finding with Ultra Wideband, on iPhone and Apple Watch | Chipolo POP: Bluetooth and an alarm, no Ultra Wideband |
| Sound | AirTag: 50% louder than the first AirTag, no dB figure given | Chipolo POP: About 120 dB |
| Range | AirTag: Up to 1.5x the Precision Finding range of before, no distance given | Chipolo POP: Bluetooth up to 90 m (300 ft) listed |
| Battery | AirTag: CR2032, replaceable, more than a year | Chipolo POP: CR2032, replaceable, about 1 year |
| Water and dust | AirTag: IP67 | Chipolo POP: IP55 |
| Size | AirTag: 31.9 mm across, 8.0 mm high, 11.8 g | Chipolo POP: 38.8 mm across, 6.6 mm thick |
| Attaching | AirTag: No hole, needs a holder or key ring | Chipolo POP: Keyring hole built in |
| Looks | AirTag: One design | Chipolo POP: 6 colors |
The sound and range rows are worth a second look. Apple gives AirTag's speaker only as "50% louder" than before, with no decibel figure, so the 120 dB on the POP's page cannot be compared with it directly. And a listed range is a best case: Tom's Guide found the POP's 300 ft closer to 35 feet in its own test.

1. Apple AirTag: the iPhone tag

Apple AirTag (2nd generation)
The AirTag works through the Find My app on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. Apple says its speaker is 50% louder and its Precision Finding range up to 1.5 times greater than before, and that Precision Finding shows the exact distance and direction when the tag is nearby. If it is out of range, Apple says the Find My network of more than a billion Apple devices can report its location, anonymously and encrypted.
Two things matter for travel. Apple says you can share an item's location temporarily with more than 50 airlines, and the sharing stops when you are reunited with the item or after seven days. And Apple says that if someone else's AirTag ends up in your belongings, your iPhone or Android phone will alert you, and the tag will start to play a sound if you still have not found it after a while. The AirTag has no keyring hole: Apple sells key rings for it. The listing we read on Amazon is shipped and sold by Amazon.com.
2. Chipolo POP: the loud, colorful tag

Chipolo POP
The Chipolo POP works with Apple Find My or with Google Find Hub on Android, one at a time: switching needs a reset. Chipolo lists about 120 dB, a Bluetooth range up to 90 m (300 ft), a replaceable CR2032 battery for about a year, an IP55 rating and a 38.8 mm round body with a keyring hole. The free Chipolo app adds extras such as Call Your Phone with a double press, but Chipolo marks Call Your Phone and its out-of-range alerts as Android only. iPhone users get out-of-range alerts through Apple's Find My app.
Tom's Guide, in its review from 28 October 2025, calls the alarm very loud, likes the keyring hole and the out-of-range alerts, and says the range was shorter in its test and that there is no Ultra Wideband. The listing we read on Amazon is shipped by Amazon and sold by Chipolo.

Keys, luggage and what to watch

Both tags use a replaceable CR2032 battery, so a tag in your bag can be kept running for years. For luggage, the main difference is the network. Apple's Find My network is the one Apple says covers more than a billion devices, and its airline sharing is built in. Chipolo says its POP uses the Apple or the Google network, and the network you pick at setup is the one that finds it. Some bags have a pocket for a tag: NOMATIC lists a hidden pocket for cash, an AirTag or other valuables on its Travel Pack page. See our Peak Design vs Nomatic comparison.
Use trackers on your own things. Apple says AirTag is designed to discourage unwanted tracking. For what to do when a bag goes missing, read what to do if your backpack is stolen abroad, and for protecting a bag in the first place see how to stop pickpockets. Choosing the bag too? Our AirTag vs Samsung SmartTag 2 and Tile vs Chipolo vs Pebblebee comparisons cover the Samsung tag and the trackers that work on both phones.

Is there an AirTag 2?
Apple's store lists a single AirTag in a 1 pack and a 4 pack, and calls it "the next generation of AirTag." Its spec page lists a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, a speaker 50% louder than before and up to 1.5 times the Precision Finding range, and says it needs iOS 26.0 or later. Amazon names the listing "Apple AirTag (2nd Generation)." On 9 October the Amazon page for the original 4 pack showed "See All Buying Options" and no add-to-cart button, so we link only to the current one.
Apple's page also says the new AirTag supports Precision Finding on Apple Watch. In its video description, MacRumors says it tested Precision Finding side by side against the first AirTag and found the improvement real.
Which one to pick
Pick the AirTag if you and the people who share your keys and bags use iPhones on iOS 26 or later and you want Precision Finding with a distance and a direction. Apple lets you share an AirTag with up to five people.
Pick the Chipolo POP if you use Android, if your iPhone cannot run iOS 26 (Chipolo asks for iOS 14.5), if you want to hear it across a noisy room, or if you want a color and a built-in keyring hole. Expect a shorter real range than the listed 90 m, and note that Call Your Phone is Android only.
