Best Multi-Currency Banks for Digital Nomads (Wise vs Revolut vs N26)

The biggest financial drain on new digital nomads is not flights or hotels. It is the 3% conversion fees their old bank charges them every time they spend abroad. Over a year, that adds up to thousands of euros. Here is the multi-currency banking stack I actually use after 27 years on the road.
The three I actually use
1. Revolut (primary card for daily spending)
Revolut is my primary card. Multi-currency wallet, free ATM withdrawals up to a monthly limit, instant currency exchange at interbank rate. I keep most of my spending money here.
Why I picked Revolut over Wise as primary: the app is faster, the card delivery is more reliable in obscure countries, and the savings vaults are useful for tax savings.
2. Wise (for receiving client payments)
Wise (formerly TransferWise) is my receive-money account. Local account numbers in USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, etc. That means US clients pay me to a “US bank account” via ACH, then I convert when I want at the best rate.
Conversion fees on Wise are usually 0.4-0.6%, way lower than any bank. For larger sums (5k+ EUR) the savings add up fast.
3. N26 (for European tax residence)
N26 is a real German bank account with IBAN. Useful for European tax residence proof, recurring SEPA payments, and direct debits. I keep it for the paperwork, not for spending.

How I split my money
- Wise: Client invoices get paid here. Convert to EUR or hold in USD depending on what I will spend on.
- Revolut: 2-3 months of spending money. Used for daily card payments, ATM withdrawals, online purchases.
- N26: Direct debits (insurance, subscriptions, German services). Just enough to cover monthly bills.

Insurance pairs with banking
If you are spending months abroad, get travel insurance that does not depend on your home country bank. I use SafetyWing as my baseline coverage, paid monthly from my Revolut card. For more thorough plans, Ekta Traveling covers higher medical limits.
