The cheap flight myth most blogs ignore

You will read everywhere that Tuesday is the cheapest day to book. That is an outdated rule of thumb. Airlines today use dynamic pricing that changes hourly based on demand, competitor moves, route popularity, and dozens of other variables. There is no magic day or hour.

What actually moves the needle is flexibility. Flexible dates, flexible airports, flexible routing. The more rigid your search, the more you pay.

Key takeaway

  • Flexible dates, flexible airports and flexible routing save more than any booking-day trick.
  • Airlines use dynamic pricing that changes hourly.

Tools We Recommend

In short: Start with Google Flights, cross-reference Skyscanner, use Kiwi for creative routing and cover yourself with delay compensation.

After years of using them, our workflow looks like this:

1. Start with Google Flights for the lay of the land

Google Flights is free, fast, and shows you the price calendar across an entire month. Open it first. Use the explore map view to see which destinations are cheapest from your current city. This is your reconnaissance step.

Do not know where to go yet? Let the price pick the place

  1. Open Google Flights and enter only the city you are flying from.
  2. Instead of typing a destination, open the world map or the list of popular destinations to see where you can fly from your city.
  3. Click the calendar: it shows the lowest total price for each day. If your dates are flexible, look at the fare trends by week or month.
  4. Found a route and a date? Compare the same route on Aviasales before you book.

2. Cross-reference with Skyscanner for multi-city options

Skyscanner catches deals Google sometimes misses, especially with budget carriers and obscure airlines. It is also better for "anywhere" searches when you have time but no destination.

3. Use Kiwi for creative routing

Kiwi.com builds self-transfer itineraries combining airlines that do not officially partner. This can save a lot on some routes, but you take on the connection risk yourself. Use only when the savings are big enough.

Our Kiwi.com review covers Kiwi multi-city search and Kiwi Nomad flights in detail.

4. Cover yourself with delay compensation

When you fly cheap with budget carriers, delays are a feature. If you ever get hit with an EU flight delay of 3+ hours, a cancellation or a denied boarding, you can be owed up to 600 EUR under EU261 (unless the airline can show extraordinary circumstances). AirHelp handles the claim paperwork. They take a cut on success, you pay nothing if they lose.

Compensair is another claim service for the same situation: its site says it helps you claim compensation of up to 600 euros for a delayed or cancelled flight or overbooking.

What you can claim depends on the distance. For a delay of 3 hours or more at arrival, a cancellation or denied boarding, the EU's official passenger rights page lists:

Flight distanceCompensation
Up to 1,500 km250 EUR
Over 1,500 km within the EU, and other flights of 1,500 to 3,500 km400 EUR
Over 3,500 km600 EUR

The rules cover flights within the EU, flights leaving an EU airport and flights arriving in the EU on an EU airline, and they also apply in Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. The airline can refuse if it proves extraordinary circumstances, and most technical problems do not count as that (Your Europe, European Union).

7 Tactics to Find Cheap Flights That Consistently Save Money

In short: Search in incognito mode, be flexible by 3 days each direction, try nearby airports, price multi-city tickets, travel with hand luggage only, use the right credit card for points and book airport transport in advance.

1. Search in incognito mode

Some travelers are convinced flight sites raise prices when you search the same route repeatedly. There is no solid proof either way, but a private window costs nothing, so it does not hurt to use one.

2. Be flexible by 3 days each direction

The cheapest day of the week varies per route. Use Google Flights price calendar to see all 7 days. Shifting your dates by a day or two can make a big difference on a long-haul.

3. Try nearby airports

If you are in Lisbon, check Porto. If you are in Berlin, check Hamburg. The savings can easily cover the train ticket to the alternative airport.

If the cheaper airport is a train or bus ride away, Omio is a booking platform for trains, buses and ferries in Europe where you can look at that ground leg.

4. Multi-city tickets

A multi-city ticket such as "Amsterdam to Bangkok to Bali to Amsterdam" sometimes costs only a little more than a plain Amsterdam to Bangkok round trip. Price both before you book: on the right route you add an entire country for a small extra.

5. Book hand luggage only when possible

Most budget airlines charge extra for checked bags. If your gear fits in the cabin allowance, you save that on every flight, which adds up over a year of nomad travel. Check each airline's cabin bag rules first.

Our guide to the best travel backpack for carry on only trips shows bags built for this.

6. Use the right credit card for points

If you are paying for flights anyway, use a card that earns transferable points. Read our credit card guide for the cards we recommend.

7. Book transport from airport in advance

A taxi from Bangkok airport at 2am after a 12-hour flight is when you make bad decisions. Pre-book a transfer at a flat rate. GetTransfer says it covers 180+ countries. Kiwitaxi is another option, especially in Europe. Landing in Tokyo? Our Tokyo digital nomad guide compares the Narita and Haneda routes into the city.

Cheap flight booking flow for nomads - How to Find Cheap Flights as a Digital Nomad

From the road

When I do not care where I am going, I use Google Flights: I click on where I am, leave the date and the place open, and see where the cheap flights go.

Then I check that the flight is not a long one, because cheap can mean 20 to 30 hours of traveling with a very long stop somewhere, and I do not feel like that. I also use a VPN, because when I log in from another country, the same ticket can suddenly be much cheaper.

In my experience, when I shared a flight I found through the share button, it was suddenly more expensive when the other person opened it.

What about flight error fares?

In short: Error fares are real but rare, and they work best if you have ultimate flexibility because they need to be booked fast.

Error fares are real but rare. Services like Scott's Cheap Flights (now Going) and Secret Flying notify you. They work best if you have ultimate flexibility: error fares usually need to be booked fast, and travel dates can be tight.

FAQ

What is the cheapest day to book a flight?

There is no magic day or hour. Airlines use dynamic pricing that changes constantly, so flexible dates, airports and routing save far more than a booking-day trick.

Which flight search engine should I start with?

Start with Google Flights and its price calendar, cross-check Skyscanner for budget carriers, and use Kiwi.com for creative self-transfer routes when the savings are big enough to justify the connection risk.

Can I get money back if my cheap flight is delayed?

For EU flights delayed 3+ hours, cancelled or overbooked, you can be owed up to 600 EUR under EU261. AirHelp handles the claim and only takes a cut if it wins.

Do multi-city tickets really save money?

Often, yes. Adding a stop to a long haul return can cost little extra: for example, Amsterdam to Bangkok to Bali and back can cost only a little more than the plain return, so price both.

How much compensation do I get for a delayed flight in the EU?

250 to 600 EUR depending on the distance, for a delay of 3 hours or more, a cancellation or denied boarding, unless extraordinary circumstances apply.
