Cheap Flights With Long Layovers: Check Before You Pay

Some links on this page are partner links: we earn a small commission if you book or buy through them, at no extra cost to you. Full disclosure.

Cheap flights with long layovers look great on the screen. The cheapest ticket is cheap for a reason, and often the reason hides in the middle of the trip: the stop.

This is how I check it before I pay, and what changes when the two flights are not on one ticket.

Quick answer

Read the layover before you pay: the cheapest ticket can mean 20 to 30 hours of travel because of one long stop. Open the result and read the stop, then sort by duration. Know whether your flights are one booking or two, and check the transit rules of the country where you change planes.

From the road: When I do not care where I am going, I use Google Flights. I click on where I am, leave the date and the place open, and see where the very cheap flights go. I also use a VPN, because when I log in through another country, the same ticket can suddenly be much cheaper.

That is my experience, not a guarantee.

How do you check a layover in 30 seconds?

In short: Click the cheap one, read every leg, sort by duration and compare the next price up.

Four checks before you pay

1

Open the cheap one

Click the cheapest result and read every leg. Look at the time between landing and the next take-off, not only the total price.

2

Sort by duration

Google Flights lets you sort by Price or Duration and filter by number of stops. Its default Top flights order weighs duration, stops and airport changes during layovers, not only price.

3

Compare the next price up

If the second cheapest saves ten hours, it is often the better deal. Your time has a price too.

4

Check the airport

Does the plane change airports, or do you have to collect your bags? That decides whether the stop is easy or stressful.

From the road: If I set the whole month open in Skyscanner, I can see which day is cheapest. Then I click it and check right away that it is not a long flight with a long stop in between.

Cheap can mean 20 to 30 hours of traveling, just because of one very long stop somewhere. I do not feel like that.

Use it, Google Flights or Skyscanner the same way: open the result and read the stop. Compare flights on Aviasales. The Google Flights link is a normal link and earns us nothing.

One ticket or two: who pays when you miss a connection?

In short: Booked as one reservation, a missed connection can be the airline's problem. On two separate tickets it is yours.

The EU's passenger rights page says you are entitled to compensation if you miss a connecting flight and arrive at your final destination more than 3 hours late. It lists conditions: your flights were booked as part of a single reservation, EU air passenger rights apply, and the delay was not caused by extraordinary circumstances. It also says you are not entitled if you miss the connection because of delays at security checks or because you did not respect the boarding time.

Two separate tickets are not one reservation, so do not plan a tight connection on them, and leave plenty of time between the flights.

You can claim from the airline yourself. AirHelp says it handles the paperwork and negotiations for flight compensation claims. The standard fee is 35 percent, which comes out of the compensation, with "no win, no fee". That is from its own homepage, read on 4 October 2026.

Do you need a visa for a long stop?

In short: Some countries ask for a transit visa even if you only change planes. Check the official page before you book.

The UK government says you might need a visa to pass through the UK in transit. You apply for a Direct Airside Transit visa if you change flights and do not go through border control. You apply for a Visitor in Transit visa if you do go through border control but leave within 48 hours. You do not need a transit visa if, for example, you have an electronic travel authorisation (ETA). Your airline can tell you whether you will go through border control.

Do

  • Check the transit rules of the country where you change planes, for your passport.
  • Ask your airline whether you will pass border control.
  • Leave a buffer if you must leave the airport.

Do not

  • Assume a long stop means you may leave the airport.
  • Book a tight connection on two separate tickets.

Key takeaways

  • Cheap can mean 20 to 30 hours of travel: read the stop before you pay.
  • Sort by duration on Google Flights and compare the next price up.
  • EU compensation for a missed connection is tied to a single reservation.
  • A long stop may need a transit visa: check the official page of that country.

FAQ

Is a long layover worth it for a cheaper flight?

Sometimes. Cheap can mean 20 to 30 hours of travel because of one very long stop, and I do not feel like that. Compare the saving with the hours: sort by duration on Google Flights and look at the next price up.

Am I covered if I miss a connection on two separate tickets?

The EU's passenger rights page ties compensation for a missed connection to flights "booked as part of a single reservation". Two separate tickets are not one reservation, so leave plenty of time between them and check your insurance.

Do I need a transit visa for a layover?

It depends on the country and your passport. The UK government, as one example, says you might need a visa to pass through the UK in transit, even if you only change planes. Check the official page of the country where you change planes.
