Kindle vs Paperwhite: Which Kindle Should You Buy in 2026?

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Some links on this page earn us a small commission, at no extra cost to you. Full disclosure.

Kindle vs Kindle Paperwhite comes down to size, light and water. Amazon lists the basic Kindle with a 6 inch screen, 158 g and up to 6 weeks of battery, and the Kindle Paperwhite with a 7 inch screen, 211 g, an adjustable warm light, IPX8 water protection and up to 12 weeks. We read both Amazon pages on 9 October 2026, and below is who should pick which.

Quick answer

Checked on 9 October 2026. Pick the Kindle Paperwhite if you read every day, read in bed or by the pool, or want the bigger page: it adds a warm light, IPX8 water protection and a 7 inch screen. Pick the basic Kindle if you want the smallest, lightest and lower-priced way into Kindle books and mostly read with the lights on. Both list Audible over Bluetooth, USB-C and 16 GB.

How we compared them

The NomadsToolsLab team read the Amazon pages for the Kindle, the Kindle Paperwhite and the Signature Edition end to end on 9 October 2026, and checked each one with a US address. What surprised us: Amazon now sells two basic Kindles side by side, the 2024 model and a 2026 one, and it lists a newer Paperwhite for pre-order with a release date of 28 October 2026. So the Paperwhite you can buy today is the 2024 model.

Nathan Groezinger at The eBook Reader put the two 2024 models side by side on 25 October 2024. He found the Paperwhite's blacks a little darker and its front light clearer, with a warm option, and he found it a touch quicker in menus. The basic Kindle is about 50 g lighter. PCWorld (last updated 26 November 2024) names no outright winner and says the higher-end Kindle buys you battery life, water resistance and a larger screen. On YouTube, Nathan's October 2026 video found the 2026 Kindle only a little quicker than the 2024 one, and Mark at The Spark!, who bought the 2026 Kindle for his wife, saw barely any difference in page turns in real use. Amazon's own review summary for the 2026 Kindle most often lists performance, color and weight.

Our reading: the Paperwhite is the better reader and the Kindle is the better pocket. Every number in the table comes from Amazon's own listings.

Kindle vs Kindle Paperwhite at a glance

Amazon prints "up to" battery figures. All four list Audible over Bluetooth and a 1-year warranty in its compare table.

1. Kindle: the pocketable one

In short: A 6 inch, 158 g reader with a 25% brighter front light than before. No warm light and no waterproof rating.

The Kindle 16 GB (2024 model) is sold by Amazon. Its listing describes a 6 inch glare-free display, a front light that is 25% brighter at the maximum setting than the previous model, dark mode, 16 GB of storage and up to 6 weeks on a charge. It weighs 158 g and measures 157.8 x 108.6 x 8.0 mm. Amazon's own compare table lists no adjustable warm light, no flush-front design and no IPX8 rating for it.

Nathan found the basic Kindle's front light brighter and more even than the previous model's, but cool only, with a slightly glittery look in the white parts of the screen that the Paperwhite does not show. He also found the page turns similar and the software almost identical. Product photo: an e-reader from Olga Tutunaru on Unsplash. It shows an earlier Kindle, not the 2024 model.

2. Kindle Paperwhite: the bigger, brighter one

In short: A 7 inch, 211 g reader with a warm light, a flush front, IPX8 and up to 12 weeks of battery.

The Kindle Paperwhite 16 GB (2024 model) is also sold by Amazon. Its listing says the 7 inch display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns than the previous generation, that one USB-C charge lasts up to 12 weeks and that the light goes from white to amber. It lists a waterproof rating of IPX8, access to over 15 million titles in the Kindle Store and Audible over Bluetooth. It weighs 211 g and is 7.8 mm thin.

The trade-off, from the same tester: in his 2026 video Nathan says the Paperwhite's flush front layer shows fingerprints more than any e-reader he has reviewed. Pack a cloth. Product photo of the Paperwhite: Jacek Halicki, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 4.0. It shows an earlier Paperwhite generation, not the 2024 model reviewed here.

Screen, light and speed

In short: Same 300 ppi sharpness. The Paperwhite adds a bigger page, a warm light and a little more speed.

Both screens are 300 ppi, so text is equally sharp. Nathan found the Paperwhite's blacks slightly darker in direct sunlight, and he gave it a slight edge, especially with the front light on. The bigger difference is the light itself. Only the Paperwhite has the white-to-amber slider, which softens the glare late at night, and its light had a smoother look in his test. Amazon's compare table lists the auto-adjusting light sensor only on the Signature Edition.

Speed is a small gap. Nathan found the Paperwhite a little quicker in menus, dictionary look-ups and scrolling, with page turns similar on both, and the Paperwhite's 7 inch page shows five covers in list view against four on the Kindle. The bigger page also helps with large type and comics: he found the text balloons of a comic easier to read on the 7 inch screen.

Weight, water and battery

In short: The Kindle is about 50 g lighter. Only the Paperwhite lists IPX8, and its battery claim is twice as long.

The basic Kindle is the one you forget is in your bag: 158 g against 211 g, and Nathan calls it the more pocketable of the two. The Paperwhite lists IPX8, so a splash or a dip in the pool is within its rating, and Amazon lists no waterproof rating for the Kindle. On battery, Amazon claims up to 12 weeks for the Paperwhite and up to 6 for the Kindle. Amazon does not spell out the daily reading time behind those figures on the pages we read, so a heavy reader with the light on will see less.

If you are away from a socket for weeks, the Paperwhite is the safer pick. For a week-long trip, either lasts. For wall sockets on a long journey, see our Anker vs UGREEN power bank comparison, and for the journey itself our comfort gear for long flights, buses and trains.

The 2026 Kindle and the next Paperwhite

In short: A newer basic Kindle is on sale, and a newer Paperwhite is on pre-order for 28 October 2026.

Amazon's listing for the newest Kindle (16 GB, 6 inch) says books open 30% faster than on the previous Kindle and that it lasts up to 6 weeks on a charge. A wireless page-turn remote called Kindle Click is sold separately. On 9 October the page showed it as a #1 New Release in eBook Readers, in stock, with 66 ratings so far. Nathan's 2026 comparison found its blacks a little darker, its dark mode deeper, its power button moved to the side and its speed boost real but modest. He did not think it worth upgrading for from the 2024 model, and he saw no front-light difference.

The newer Paperwhite is listed as "thinner and lighter" with a 7 inch display, warm light and a waterproof design, up to 12 weeks of battery, and a release date of 28 October 2026, with pre-order only on the day we read the page. We have not seen a test of it yet, and its page had no buy button, so we do not link it. If you need a reader before 28 October, the 2024 Paperwhite is in stock today. If you can wait, watch for the first tests.

Also worth a look

What Amazon says

  • 32 GB of storage, against 16 GB on the regular Paperwhite
  • An auto-adjusting front light and wireless charging (the dock is sold separately)
  • The same 7 inch screen, IPX8 and up to 12 weeks of battery
  • Listed on 9 October 2026 as in stock, with 13,171 ratings

PCWorld and The eBook Reader both put the Signature Edition next to the Paperwhite, and Nathan says it also has a metallic back that marks up less than the rubbery coating of the regular Paperwhite. It is the pick for someone who wants the extras and reads a lot. Product photo: a Kindle from Irina Rybcko on Unsplash, an earlier model.

Two YouTube testers looked at it this week. Nathan found it quicker and a little darker on the page. Mark at The Spark! found it very pocketable and crisp, and says the older 2024 basic Kindle is still on sale. Check which of the two you are looking at on the Amazon page before you buy. Sometimes you have to sit for a very long time on a train or a plane, and then it is just lovely to listen to a book or download a podcast.

Which one to pick

In short: Daily reader, bed or beach: Paperwhite. Light pack, light reader: Kindle.

The daily reader: the Paperwhite, for the warm light and the bigger page. The bath, beach or pool reader: the Paperwhite, the only one of the two with a waterproof rating. The one with a tight pack: the Kindle, which is the smaller and lighter reader. The big-type or comic reader: the Paperwhite, because the 7 inch page shows more. The casual reader on a budget: the Kindle, which was the lower of the two prices on the Amazon pages.
