Kindle Paperwhite vs Colorsoft: Is Color Worth 4 Fewer Weeks of Battery?

Kindle Paperwhite vs Colorsoft is a trade of color against battery and text sharpness. Amazon's own pages list the same 7-inch screen size, the same body size, the same IPX8 waterproofing and 16 GB of storage on both, but up to 12 weeks of battery on the Paperwhite against up to 8 on the Colorsoft. We read both Amazon pages on 9 October 2026 and then read what independent testers found.

Quick answer
Checked on 9 October 2026. Pick the Paperwhite if you mostly read novels: Amazon lists up to 12 weeks of battery, and testers say its text looks slightly sharper. Pick the Colorsoft if you read comics, magazines or illustrated books, or want your library and highlights in color, and can live with up to 8 weeks of battery.

On 9 October 2026 Amazon lists a newer Kindle Paperwhite and a newer Kindle Colorsoft, both described as "thinner and lighter", for release on 28 October 2026 and open for pre-order only. How we compared them
The NomadsToolsLab team read the Amazon pages for both Kindles on 9 October 2026 with a US delivery address, and every number in the table comes from them. What surprised us: the two are nearly the same device. Amazon lists the same 5 x 7 x 0.3 inch body (7.4 oz against 7.6 oz), the same IPX8 rating and the same 16 GB, so the decision sits in color, battery and sharpness.
Testers agree on that trade. The UK site Choose (updated 10 August 2026) says the color filter on the Colorsoft makes black text look slightly softer, with a faint grain, and that its warm light needs turning up further, which costs battery. On YouTube, Khalilah D. (June 2026) owned both for over a year and would not upgrade from a Paperwhite just for colored highlights. Steven Foster (March 2026) used the 16 GB Colorsoft for a month, calls the softness subtle, and kept it because seeing his library in color made him pick the Kindle up more. Owners on Amazon most often mention battery life, size and page-turn speed, according to the summary Amazon shows of its reviews.
Our conclusion: pick the Paperwhite unless you read color content or want the color library.

We kept the table to the two Kindles in the question. Amazon also sells a Paperwhite Signature Edition, covered in the Paperwhite section below.
1. Kindle Paperwhite 16 GB (2024 model)

Kindle Paperwhite 16 GB
The Kindle Paperwhite is the plain black-and-white Kindle. Amazon's page lists a 7-inch glare-free screen at 300 ppi, 16 GB, an adjustable light from white to amber, USB-C charging and IPX8 waterproofing, tested in 2 meters of fresh water for 60 minutes. It says one charge lasts up to 12 weeks, based on half an hour of reading a day with wireless off and the light at setting 13.
On 9 October 2026 the listing we link showed In Stock with an Add to cart button, sold by Amazon.com with a 30-day refund or replacement, and 10K+ bought in the past month. The page showed no category rank. It offers an ad-supported version, with sponsored screensavers on the lock screen, and a version without lock screen ads.
If you want more, the Paperwhite Signature Edition adds 32 GB, an auto-adjusting front light and wireless charging. It was also in stock on 9 October, sold by Amazon.com, with 10K+ bought last month. Khalilah D. and Lottie Smalley both say 16 GB is plenty for e-books and that you only need the extra storage if you sync Audible audiobooks to the Kindle.
Paperwhite Signature Edition on Amazon
The trade-off, per the testers above: it is black and white only, so covers and illustrations show in gray.
2. Kindle Colorsoft 16 GB (2024 model)

Kindle Colorsoft 16 GB
The Kindle Colorsoft has the same size as the Paperwhite and a color layer on the screen. Amazon lists 300 ppi for black and white and 150 ppi for color, 16 GB, up to 8 weeks of battery, IPX8 waterproofing, 7.6 oz, and highlights in yellow, orange, blue and pink. Amazon's own warning: because of the color filter layer, the texture or brightness of the screen may look different from the Paperwhite display.
On 9 October 2026 the listing we link (titled "No Ads") showed In Stock with an Add to cart button, sold by Amazon.com with a 30-day refund or replacement, and 10K+ bought in the past month. The page showed no category rank.
The trade-offs, per the testers: Choose found the text slightly softer than the Paperwhite and the warm light hungrier on battery; Khalilah D. found it a little fuzzier but not hard to read; and The eBook Reader, comparing the first Signature-level Colorsoft in November 2024, saw a darker screen with the light off because of the color filter.

Which one to pick
Mostly novels, and you want the sharpest text and the longest battery: the Paperwhite. Up to 12 weeks matters on long trips where plugs are scarce. Comics, magazines, cookbooks or illustrated books, or you like color covers: the Colorsoft. Already own a Paperwhite: keep it, says Khalilah D. Want auto-brightness or wireless charging: the Signature Edition above. Can wait: newer models are listed for 28 October.

FAQ
Is the Kindle Colorsoft worth it over the Paperwhite?
Only if you read color content or like seeing your library in color. The Paperwhite lists up to 12 weeks of battery against up to 8, and testers find its black text slightly sharper. Khalilah D. would not upgrade from a Paperwhite just for colored highlights.
Does the Colorsoft have worse battery life than the Paperwhite?
On paper, yes: Amazon lists up to 8 weeks for the Colorsoft and up to 12 for the Paperwhite. Choose adds that the warm light on the Colorsoft usually needs more turning up, which costs more battery.
Is Colorsoft text less sharp than Paperwhite text?
Slightly. Both list 300 ppi for black and white, but the Colorsoft has a color filter layer. Amazon warns the screen may look different, Choose reports slightly softer text, and Khalilah D. calls the difference marginal.
Are the Kindle Paperwhite and Colorsoft waterproof?
Yes. Amazon lists IPX8 for both, tested in 2 meters of fresh water for 60 minutes.
Should I wait for the new Paperwhite and Colorsoft?
On 9 October 2026 Amazon lists newer versions of both for release on 28 October, open for pre-order only, with the same battery figures. If you do not need a Kindle before then, waiting costs nothing.
