You are packing a power bank in hand luggage and pause to check the capacity label. Before choosing one, check its watt-hours and your airline's rules on how many you can carry and what you can do with them on board.

Quick answer

Checked on 19 October 2026. Carry power banks in hand luggage, protect them against short circuit and check your airline's limits. UK CAA guidance sets a maximum of two per person, prohibits recharging a power bank on board and advises against using one to charge devices. The INIU Pocket Rocket offers low weight, INIU Carry adds capacity and Anker Nano has a retractable cable. For laptop charging, compare the UGREEN Nexode or Anker 737 with your laptop's power needs.

How we compared them

The NomadsToolsLab team read the TSA, FAA, UK CAA and IATA rule pages on 19 October 2026. The team also reviewed the five manufacturers' product pages and checked each Amazon listing with a US address. INIU and UGREEN state Wh figures, while Anker does not print it on its pages. The UK CAA rules in force since 27 March 2026 set a maximum of two power banks per person, prohibit recharging a power bank on board and advise against using one to charge devices.

The rules for power banks on a plane

In short: Power banks belong in carry-on baggage. Capacity, quantity and onboard use restrictions need separate checks before you fly.

TSA says lithium-ion power banks must travel in carry-on bags, never in checked baggage. FAA PackSafe also requires spare lithium batteries, including power banks, to be carried on. These are the spare-battery rules relevant to this comparison. Protect each pack from damage and short circuit, and remember that the TSA officer has the final say at screening. Sources: TSA, FAA PackSafe, UK CAA and IATA, read on 19 October 2026.

FAA PackSafe allows power banks up to 100 Wh, requires airline approval for 101 to 160 Wh and forbids those over 160 Wh. IATA generally allows up to 100 Wh in carry-on baggage, requires approval for the higher capacity band up to 160 Wh and generally excludes packs above 160 Wh. Always check your airline because its rules can be stricter.

Under UK CAA rules in force since 27 March 2026, you may carry a maximum of two power banks per person, each protected against short circuit. Keep them in carry-on baggage. Do not recharge a power bank on board; CAA guidance also advises against using it to charge another device. Your airline may prohibit that use. The CAA allows up to 100 Wh without approval and requires operator approval for the higher capacity band up to 160 Wh.

Look for a Wh figure on the pack's label or in the manufacturer's specifications. If you need to calculate it, use Wh = mAh x volts / 1000. Use the battery's rated voltage, with power bank cells usually rated at 3.6 or 3.7 V.

A 10,000 mAh battery at 3.7 V works out to 37 Wh. At that same voltage, 100 Wh is about 27,000 mAh. A calculated figure depends on the voltage used, so check the pack's label before relying on it for travel.

The Anker 737 Power Bank, model A1289, offers 24,000 mAh and 140 W total output. It has two USB-C ports, one USB-A port and a smart display.

Anker’s linked page does not state the Wh rating. Check the label on your specific pack before flying. At 630 g, it is the heaviest of these five, so weigh its capacity against the extra bag weight.

Which power bank should you pack?

For the lowest weight here, choose the INIU Pocket Rocket. For 20,000 mAh with an attached cable, consider the INIU Carry. The Anker Nano suits a preference for a retractable cable while keeping capacity at 10,000 mAh.

For laptop charging, compare the UGREEN Nexode's 100 W USB-C1 output with your laptop's requirements. The Anker 737 offers 24,000 mAh and 140 W total output, but weighs more. Wh determines the energy capacity relevant to flight limits, while W describes power output.
