Best eSIM for Digital Nomads (Airalo vs Holafly vs Local SIM)

Landing in a new country, finding wifi, finding a SIM card stall, talking to a clerk who does not speak your language, choosing the wrong package, getting overcharged. That is what eSIM solved for digital nomads. After 27 years of doing it the old way, here is what actually works now.

The 3 eSIM options I have researched

1. Airalo (best overall)

Airalo covers 200+ countries with regional and global packs. App is fast. Activation takes 30 seconds. Pricing is the best for most destinations.

The main reason I keep going back: when I land in a new country, my eSIM is already active by the time I leave the plane. No queue at the airport SIM stall.

2. Holafly (best for unlimited data)

Holafly’s selling point is unlimited data. For a content creator who uploads YouTube videos from a cafe, that matters. Pricing per day is higher than Airalo per-GB, but if you actually use 5GB+ per day, Holafly wins on total cost.

3. DrimSim (best as backup)

DrimSim is a physical SIM card that works in 190+ countries. Useful if your phone does not support eSIM (older Android), or as backup when your eSIM provider has issues in a specific country.

When local SIM still beats eSIM

If you are staying in one country for 30+ days, a local SIM is usually 50-70% cheaper than any eSIM. The downside: paperwork, sometimes ID registration, sometimes lining up at the office.

My rule: under 14 days, eSIM (Airalo). Over 30 days, local SIM. In between, depends on whether the country has cheap nomad SIMs.

Pair with a travel router

If you work remotely from cafes, hotels, or coliving spaces, pair your eSIM with a travel router. Convert hotel wifi to your own secure network. Mask the device count from greedy hotel wifi limits. See my travel router guide.
