The idea is simple: a surf session at sunrise, a laptop open by nine, and a town that has both a wave and a workspace. This guide to the best surf spots for digital nomads covers eight places on four continents, with the season each source names, the level each wave suits, a school that is operating today and a workspace where we could verify one. It also covers what to pack, what to rent and what the two big nomad insurers say about surfing.
Quick answer
Pick the spot by season and level: Weligama and Baleal suit learners, Taghazout and Ericeira suit people who already stand up, and Santa Teresa works year-round. Pack a rash guard and mineral sunscreen, rent the board, and check that your insurance lists surfing.
Checked on 5 October 2026: SafetyWing still lists surfing on its base Nomad Insurance Essential plan for classes, solo training, private lessons and informal group training (safetywing.com).

Two of the rows come from tourism or conservation bodies: Save The Waves says Ericeira's best season is October to May, and Sri Lanka Tourism says Arugam Bay's season runs from April to October, with May to November as the best stretch. The others come from The Surf Atlas, a surf guide, and from Surf Maroc's own guide to Taghazout. Santa Teresa's tourism board says surfing is popular year-round and that September and October bring the rain and fewer visitors. On Siargao, The Surf Atlas puts the best surf from September to December, while other pages we saw name September to November, so look at the swell forecast for your dates.
The 8 surf spots for digital nomads
1. Bali: Canggu and Uluwatu

Canggu and Uluwatu
Level: Canggu has beach breaks: per The Surf Atlas, Batu Bolong is the most popular beginner spot and Berawa suits beginners and low intermediates, while Echo Beach breaks over shallow reef and is not for beginners. Uluwatu is a left reef point the same guide calls not a beginner break.
Season: The dry season, April to October, is best; November to March waves are lighter and mushier at Canggu.
Expect crowds at both breaks and some localism at Uluwatu and Echo Beach, per The Surf Atlas. You can book a lesson through Klook, which lists surf lessons in Canggu.
2. Siargao, Philippines

General Luna and Cloud 9
Level: Per The Surf Atlas, Cloud 9 is a fast, hollow reef break for experts; Jacking Horse is the usual wave for lessons. Reef is everywhere and urchins sit in the shallows.
Season: The Surf Atlas names September to December as optimal, with April and May working for intermediates.
GIUSA Surf School teaches near Cloud 9, from beginner to advanced, and Coco Space is a coworking space for remote workers on the island. Klook also lists a Siargao surfing lesson.

Klook
3. Ericeira, Portugal

Ericeira World Surfing Reserve
Level: Save The Waves describes about 5 km of coast with waves from beach breaks to powerful reef breaks, for all levels from beginners to professionals. It was dedicated in October 2011 as the second World Surfing Reserve and the first in Europe.
Season: October to May is the best season per Save The Waves; summer is smaller and kinder to beginners per The Surf Atlas.
Rapture Camps sits about 40 km from Lisbon, per its own site, and its lessons provide boards from soft-tops to longboards, wetsuits, rash vests and reef booties. Foz do Lizandro suits learners, while the northern reefs are advanced, and The Surf Atlas warns about sea urchins at Coxos. Outsite Ericeira is a surf lodge with dedicated workspaces. Moving there long term? See the Portugal D8 visa guide.
4. Peniche and Baleal, Portugal

Peniche and Baleal
Level: Per The Surf Atlas, Baleal has protected north-facing beach breaks for learners, while Supertubos and Papoa are for advanced surfers. Rock and reef are the hazards.
Season: Small to overhead from May to October with the summer Nortada wind (best early or late); larger groundswells from November to April.
Baleal Surf Camp runs lessons for all levels and rents boards from Praia do Baleal. We could not confirm a coworking space in Peniche on its own website, so plan on a desk at your accommodation and check the wifi before you book.
5. Taghazout, Morocco

Taghazout, north of Agadir
Level: Right-hand point breaks. Surf Maroc and The Surf Atlas name Panorama beach and Devil's Rock as beginner friendly and Anchor Point as advanced.
Season: Surf Maroc says October to April is high season with long point breaks and May to September brings smaller waves for learners.
Surf Maroc runs coaching in five levels and its coaching package includes a standard board and wetsuit rental; its guide suggests a 3/2 mm wetsuit in winter and a shorty or swimwear in summer. We found no coworking space in Taghazout confirmed on its own website.
6. Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

Santa Teresa and Mal Pais
Level: The tourism board calls the surf consistent and ideal for all levels, from beginners to pros. The Surf Atlas names Playa Hermosa as arguably the best beginner beach.
Season: Surfing is popular year-round; September and October bring the heavier rain and fewer visitors.
LaPoint Surfcamp teaches in three levels by experience at Playa Carmen or Playa Hermosa. Outsite Santa Teresa Playa is a coworking resort with dedicated workspaces. The tourism board says Santa Teresa is crowded with surfers, nomads and tourists, while Mal Pais is more relaxed.
7. Weligama, Sri Lanka

Weligama, south coast
Level: The Surf Atlas calls the sandy bay the best spot in Sri Lanka for beginners, with reef breaks such as Midigama nearby for stronger surfers. Expect crowds of learners and urchins near the reef.
Season: November to March.
The AMA Surf School states on its own site that its instructors are certified by the International Surfing Association. We could not confirm a coworking space on its own website, so check the wifi where you sleep.
8. Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka

Arugam Bay, east coast
Level: Sri Lanka Tourism names the point breaks The Point, Pottuvil Point and Crocodile Rock, each within an hour by tuk tuk, and notes that the bay hosted the first international ISA competition in summer 2004. The Surf Atlas warns of crocodiles in the lagoons and wild elephants near some spots.
Season: April to October, with May to November the best stretch, per Sri Lanka Tourism. It is the opposite season to Weligama.
We could not confirm a school or a workspace here on its own website, so ask your guesthouse for a coach and check the connection before you commit to a work month.
What should you pack, and what can you rent?

Usually included in a lesson
Board (soft-top to longboard)
Wetsuit or rash guard, depending on the school
Reef booties at some schools
Worth packing
A rash guard
Mineral sunscreen
Water shoes for rocky entries
A small dry bag
Rash guard: O'Neill Basic Skins
O'Neill Basic Skins UPF 50+ long sleeve
A rash guard protects your chest and arms from the sun and from board rash. The O'Neill Basic Skins is a long sleeve UPF 50+ shirt that Amazon lists for surfing and other outdoor activities, and it packs flat. Wash it in fresh water and dry it in the shade.
Mineral sunscreen: Stream2Sea SPF 30

Stream2Sea SPF 30 Mineral Sunscreen (Travel Size)
NOAA says certain chemical UV filters can harm corals and other marine life, and it prefers mineral sunscreen or UV-protective clothing. The Stream2Sea SPF 30 is a travel size mineral sunscreen. Between a rash guard and a hat, you need less of it.
Water shoes: Speedo Tidal Cruiser
Speedo Tidal Cruiser Water Shoe
Many of these spots mean a walk over rock or reef to reach the water, and the Surf Atlas mentions urchins at Ericeira's Coxos, around Siargao's reef and near the reef breaks at Weligama. The Speedo Tidal Cruiser is a water shoe for that walk. It is not a surf boot, so ask your school what it provides.
Dry bag: Earth Pak 5L

Earth Pak 5L Waterproof Dry Bag
A roll-top bag keeps a phone, keys and a card dry on a beach where nobody guards your things. The Earth Pak 5L clips onto a day pack. Our guide to beach and rest day gear has more for the days off the water.
Flying with your own board? Airlines treat boards as sports equipment. TAP's page, read on 3 October 2026, says surf, kitesurf and windsurf boards must be packed in appropriate bags and that a Declaration of Transport must be completed, so check your airline before you buy a board bag. The rest of the bag is in our packing list and best backpacks.
Does travel insurance cover surfing?

We read both insurers' own pages on 3 October 2026. Wording depends on the plan and, for World Nomads, on the country you live in.
| Plan | Surfing | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| SafetyWing Nomad Insurance Essential, base plan | Listed, no add-on | Applies to solo training, classes, private lessons and informal group training. Not for professionals or instructors, and not if you intend to compete. |
| World Nomads (US activity list) | Listed for all plans | The page was last updated on 12 December 2024. Other countries have their own pages. |

How do you surf safely in a new place?
Do
- Take a lesson on your first day at a new spot, as the schools above offer.
- Check the beach forecast and talk to lifeguards where there are any, as the US National Weather Service advises for rip currents.
- Ask about reef, rocks and urchins before you walk in.
Do not
- Paddle out at a reef break such as Cloud 9, Echo Beach or Uluwatu because it looks good in photos.
- Leave a phone and cash on the sand.
- Assume your insurance covers it without reading the list.
Our digital nomad health guide covers staying well on the road, and kitesurfing is our guide to the next sport in this series.

Key takeaways
- Choose the spot by season and by level: Weligama, Baleal and Santa Teresa for learners, reef points for experienced surfers.
- Ericeira, Taghazout and Weligama peak in the northern winter, Bali and Arugam Bay in the northern summer.
- Rent, do not carry: lessons usually include the board. Pack a rash guard, mineral sunscreen, water shoes and a dry bag.
- SafetyWing's base plan and World Nomads' US list both include surfing. Read the conditions for your plan.
