Bali is the most popular digital nomad destination on earth. It is also the most overhyped. After 6 months living there over multiple trips, here is the honest breakdown.

The 3 nomad zones in Bali

1. Canggu (the modern hub)

This is where 80% of nomads live now. Surf beaches, vegan cafes, coworking spaces every 100 meters. Pros: easy to make friends, fast internet, every service you need. Cons: traffic is horrible, beach is okay not great, very expat-heavy.

2. Ubud (the spiritual hub)

Rice fields, jungle yoga, ceremonies, monkeys. Pros: cheaper than Canggu, calmer pace, beautiful surroundings. Cons: humidity, no beach, more spiritual scene than party scene.

3. Uluwatu (the surf hub)

Cliffs, world-class surf, sunsets at Single Fin. Pros: incredible coastline, less crowded than Canggu. Cons: limited coworking infrastructure, you need a scooter to get anywhere.

Setup you need before landing

  • eSIM: Airalo Indonesia pack activated before landing. Indonesian wifi at the airport is unreliable.
  • Airport transfer: GetTransfer from Denpasar (DPS) to your accommodation. Avoid the airport taxi mafia.
  • Insurance: SafetyWing minimum. Scooter accidents in Bali are extremely common.
  • Tour activities: Klook dominates Bali for activities (Mount Batur sunrise, Gili island day trips, snorkeling).

Banking and money

Bali ATMs charge 2-5 USD per withdrawal plus an unfavorable rate. Use a multi-currency card like Revolut to limit damage. See my banking guide for the full setup.

Cost of living 2026

  • Decent housing under 1,000 USD/month is still possible in Ubud and Uluwatu
  • Canggu has gentrified – expect 800-2,000 USD for nicer apartments
  • Eating out: 5-20 USD per meal depending on warung vs restaurant
  • Scooter rental long-term: 60-100 USD/month
  • Coworking monthly: 120-250 USD
  • Total comfortable monthly budget: 1,200-2,500 USD

The mistakes new nomads make

  1. Booking only 1 week of accommodation – find a place once you arrive and have time to look
  2. Renting a scooter without an international license (illegal, expensive fines)
  3. Eating from Bali Belly food stalls in the first week before adapting
  4. Drinking tap water – always bottled or filtered
  5. Not checking visa requirements – 30-day visa-free expired in 2023, now 30/60/180 days options
