The best Bluetooth speaker for van life takes rain, dust and a drop onto gravel, and still lasts the evening. We checked six on 9 October 2026 against the makers’ own pages and what testers measured.

Quick answer

Checked on 9 October 2026. Best all-rounder: the JBL Charge 6. Camp bass and a phone charger in one: the Soundcore Boom 2. Smallest to pack: the JBL Clip 5 or the Soundcore Select 4 Go.

How we compared them

The NomadsToolsLab team read the makers' pages for all six speakers end to end on 9 October 2026 and checked each Amazon page with a US address. What surprised us: the battery claims are not measured the same way. Bose gives its 12 hours at 50% volume, Soundcore gives 24 hours at 50% volume with BassUp and the lights off, and JBL's 28 hours for the Charge 6 includes 4 hours of Playtime Boost.

Testers at TechGearLab measured 14.8 hours on the Charge 6, 33.8 on the Boom 2, 25.4 on the Select 4 Go, 10.5 on the Flex and 8.8 on the Clip 5 in their May 2026 update. SoundGuys names the Charge 6 best overall, the Boom 2 best value and the Clip 5 best for travel, and Expert Reviews picks the Flip 7. That fits how we read the pages: one all-rounder, one bass speaker, and small ones for the bag. Every number in the table comes from the makers' own pages.

The six side by side

In short: The biggest differences: battery, dust protection, whether it charges a phone, and whether it floats.

Figures are the makers' own claims, read on 9 October 2026 on the pages of JBL, Soundcore and Bose. "Not stated" means the page does not say.

JBL Charge 6: the all-rounder

In short: IP68, a built-in powerbank and up to 28 hours claimed. Testers measured less, but still a long evening.

The Charge 6 is the speaker most of our sources agree on. JBL lists up to 28 hours of playtime, 24 on a single charge plus 4 with Playtime Boost, IP68 dust and water protection, Bluetooth 5.4 and a built-in powerbank that charges your mobile device. The IP68 rating is based on lab conditions of up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for 30 minutes, and JBL says it survives a drop from 1 meter.

The catch is the battery. In a video test at 80 dB, SoundGuys measured 13 hours 15 minutes against the 24 hour claim, and TechGearLab measured 14.8 hours. That is still enough for a long evening. SoundGuys also notes that the Charge 6 does not float, even with IP68.

Soundcore Boom 2: bass and a power bank in one

In short: The camp-party speaker: up to 24 hours at half volume, floats, charges a phone. Heavier at 3.7 lb.

Soundcore says the Boom 2 plays up to 24 hours at 50% volume with BassUp and light effects turned off. It is IPX7, floats, has a built-in power bank and a handle, and weighs 3.7 lb. Output is 60 W as standard and up to 80 W in BassUp 2.0 mode. Soundcore recommends it for "Backyard BBQs, Garage Workouts, Car Camping".

TechGearLab measured 33.8 hours and gave it a Best Buy award. The limits, from Soundcore's own FAQ: no AUX jack, and the waterproof cover must be sealed tightly before the speaker goes near water. The page lists a water rating but no dust rating, so on a dusty pitch keep the cover closed.

Bose SoundLink Flex (2nd Gen): small and floats

In short: Compact at 1.3 lb with IP67 and a 12 hour claim. The one pick here that cannot charge your phone.

Bose lists up to 12 hours for the SoundLink Flex, measured with A2DP at 50% volume, IP67, a weight of 1.291 lb and a stereo mode when you link two. It floats, but Bose says it is not designed to be used while in water. Its comparison table gives "Charging Out: No", so it will not top up a phone.

Testers are split. TechGearLab gave it its Editors' Choice award and measured about 10.5 hours, while SoundGuys says it "remains a good portable option" but is no longer one of its main picks. Read it as a good small speaker, not the longest-lasting one.

JBL Flip 7: the midsize one

In short: IP68 and up to 16 hours in a bottle-sized body. Expert Reviews' overall winner.

JBL says the Flip 7 plays 14 hours on one charge, 16 with Playtime Boost, and is IP68. A loop and a carabiner are in the box, and the USB-C port can play lossless audio from a compatible source. Bluetooth 5.4 and Auracast let you link more JBL speakers.

Expert Reviews names it its best Bluetooth speaker overall, with "14 hours of moderate-volume listening" in its test, and lists one con: no USB-C cable in the box. The JBL page does not mention a power bank function, so plan to charge your phone some other way.

JBL Clip 5: clips onto the bag

In short: 285 g with a built-in carabiner and IP67. The battery is the shortest here.

The Clip 5 weighs 0.285 kg and is 8.6 by 13.5 by 4.6 cm, according to JBL. It claims up to 12 hours plus 3 with Playtime Boost, IP67, and a fully integrated carabiner. Pair two Clip 5 speakers for stereo, JBL says.

TechGearLab measured 8.8 hours and named it its best shower speaker, and SoundGuys picks it for travel. If your day is a hike or a bike ride rather than an evening at the van, this is the one that disappears into a bag.

Soundcore Select 4 Go: the mini that floats

In short: A 20 hour claim, IP67 and a strap. TechGearLab measured 25.4 hours.

Soundcore says the Select 4 Go plays 20 hours, is IP67, floats and can be immersed in up to 3.3 ft of water for 30 minutes. A strap is included. The newest version cannot be paired for stereo with older versions, Soundcore says.

TechGearLab measured 25.4 hours and gave it a Best Buy award, and SoundGuys calls it the best budget pick. Soundcore lists 5 W of output, so expect van-sized sound, not campsite-sized.

Which one to pick for a van, a caravan or a houseboat

In short: Pick by where you will use it: the van, the quay or the bag.

Living in the van or caravan: the Charge 6, because it can charge your phone and carries an IP68 rating. If you want more bass and can live with 3.7 lb, take the Boom 2. On a houseboat or by the water: the Boom 2 and the Select 4 Go float, and the Flex floats too, but Bose says it is not made to be used in water. Traveling light: the Clip 5 or the Select 4 Go.

A speaker with a USB-C port needs a charging plan. Our guides to a portable power station for van life and to Anker and UGREEN power banks cover that, and the camper van wiring guide shows where a 12 V USB socket and the wiring behind it go. For a longer trip, the beach and rest day gear guide lists what else to bring. Whatever you pick, check the quiet hours of the site: sound carries a long way on a still evening.

Key takeaways
  • The Charge 6 is IP68, charges a phone and is named best overall by SoundGuys; testers measured 13 to 15 hours of battery, not 28.
  • The Boom 2 claims 24 hours at half volume, floats and has a power bank; TechGearLab measured 33.8 hours. It weighs 3.7 lb.
  • The Flex cannot charge a phone and the Clip 5 has the shortest battery, but both are small enough for any bag.
  • Battery claims use different volumes, so compare what testers measured, not just the box.
