The best portable shower for camper van life is, for most people, one that does not burn gas. We checked five on 9 October 2026: three without gas, and two propane heaters made for outdoor use only.

Quick answer

Checked on 9 October 2026. Best seller, no gas: the Spopal 6000mAh. No battery at all: the NEMO Helio. Lightest: the Sea to Summit Pocket Shower. Hot water on demand: a propane Camplux, outdoors only.

Gas is the risk. A propane water heater makes carbon monoxide, which has no smell. The Camplux AY132 manual says: "Never use this appliance in an enclosed space such as a camper, tent, car or home." Its warning list adds: do not use it in caravans, tents, marine craft, cars or mobile homes. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission says: "Never use fuel-burning portable heaters or lanterns while sleeping in enclosed areas such as tents, campers and vehicles." If you carry gas at all, fit a CO alarm: see our carbon monoxide detector guide.

How we compared them

The NomadsToolsLab team read the makers’ pages for all five products on 9 October 2026, went through the Camplux AY132 manual, and checked each Amazon page with a US address. What surprised us: Camplux’s shop page says its heaters are designed for "outdoor or properly ventilated indoor use only", while the manual of the AY132 forbids use in campers, caravans and marine craft. We follow the stricter text.

Testers at OutdoorGearLab (December 2025, 11 showers tested) named the NEMO Helio their best overall and the Spopal 6000mAh a Best Buy, though the Spopal ran 1 hour 10 minutes on a charge against Spopal’s claim of up to 150 minutes. They found a larger Camplux propane heater comfortable but complicated to set up and not very portable. That fits how we read the pages: no gas for most vans, and gas only outside. Every number in the table comes from the makers’ own pages.

The five side by side

In short: The biggest differences: how the water moves, what powers it, and whether it heats.

Figures are the makers’ own claims, read on 9 October 2026 on the pages of Spopal, NEMO, Sea to Summit and Camplux.

Spopal 6000mAh: the pump shower

In short: Drop the pump into a bucket of warm water. It does not heat, and it ran shorter than claimed in a test.

Spopal says the Spopal 6000mAh runs 120 to 150 minutes on its 6000 mAh battery and charges over USB-C, with a silicone cover on the port. A display shows battery and water temperature (32 to 140 F), there are four spray modes, and a filter element sits in the shower head. Spopal states that it "does not have a heating function". The pump sinks, grips the bucket and is rated IPX7 in the listing title.

OutdoorGearLab named it a Best Buy, liked the comfortable spray and several spray modes, and measured 1.3 gallons a minute. Its minus points: heavy for a portable shower, and the battery lasted 1 hour 10 minutes in the test. In a short owner demo, the owner puts the pump into a basin of hot water for camping or when the power or water is out, and gets a hot shower that way.

NEMO Helio: pressure without a battery

In short: A foot pump pressurizes the tank. NEMO says it gives 5 to 7 minutes of steady spray from 11.3 L.

NEMO describes the Helio as a 2.9-gallon (11.3 L) vertical reservoir with a large port, a pressurizing foot pump and a 7-foot neoprene hose with a two-stage nozzle that can be triggered or set to continuous spray. NEMO says it gives five to seven minutes of continuous, steady spraying power, that the tank cannot be overinflated, and the brand carries a lifetime warranty. The page lists no heating.

OutdoorGearLab gave it its Editors’ Choice as the best overall camping shower, with a score of 76, praising the packability and the pressure and noting a narrower spray. It says the water can warm in the sun: "a hot shower after just a few hours in the sun." That makes it the pick for a van or a deck where you have no spare battery.

Sea to Summit Pocket Shower: the light one

In short: A 120 g nylon bag that the sun warms. Low pressure is the trade-off.

Sea to Summit lists a 10 L bag of 70D nylon with taped seams, a packed weight of 120 g (4.2 oz), a twist on and off shower head in the base and 6 meters of cord for hanging. The black fabric "soaks up the sun" for an eight-ish minute warm shower, the maker says, and it doubles as a dry sack.

The Pocket Shower is OutdoorGearLab’s Top Pick for backpacking, with the notes that the pressure is relatively low, hanging can be challenging and the top roll leaks slightly. For a van or a houseboat it makes sense as the backup that takes no room.

Camplux AY132 pump kit: hot water, outdoors only

In short: Propane hot water with a 12 V pump. Its manual forbids use in caravans, campers and marine craft.

The Camplux AY132 kit pairs the 5 L, 1.32 GPM AY132 tankless heater with a 12 V pump. Camplux lists up to 34,000 BTU/h, a flow of 2.5 to 6 liters a minute, CSA approval, a flame failure device and overheat protection. The heater needs propane, and the ignition runs on two D batteries. The manual puts the minimum temperature for safe use and storage at above 32 F (0 C), and warns that water over 125 F (52 C) can cause severe burns instantly.

Where to use it is the rule that matters. The manual says "Use only outdoors", and its warning list says not to use it in caravans, tents, marine craft, cars, mobile homes or similar locations. The Amazon listing mentions RV use, but the manual does not allow it, so set it up on the ground, away from the vehicle. A tester on video said the setup is "like 15% too much trouble" and that 20 L of water is barely enough for two people at this flow, which is why a real shower tent and a big water source help.

From the road: I had a CO alarm, a smoke alarm and a fire extinguisher in the van, and I think all three are very important. I do not remember which brands they were. Cooking on gas, and we had an extra one where you can cook outside.

Camplux Nano 3 Pro: the smaller heater

In short: A battery-powered propane heater that comes with its pump. Treat it as outdoors only.

Camplux lists 20,500 BTU and a built-in 4,000 mAh battery for about 1.5 hours of operation for the Nano 3 Pro. The package includes a 12 V pump, cables, a gas regulator, a shower bracket, a head and a hose. The shop page calls it a product for "outdoor or properly ventilated indoor use only", and we found no manual for the Nano 3 Pro, so we apply the stricter warning from the AY132 manual of the same maker: outdoors only, never in a vehicle or boat.

Warm water in a van, a caravan or a houseboat

In short: Keep the flame outside, and bring the warmth in with a pot, the sun or a pump.

From the road: In Berlin I built my own houseboat: a big raft, a cabin boat and a dinghy, all DIY, with solar panels and my own water filter systems. I lived on it for five years, on my own pirate boat. I was really autonomous on the water.

The simple route is a shower that does not make fire: warm water from a pot or the sun, then a pump (Spopal), a foot pump (NEMO) or gravity (Sea to Summit). That works in a van, a caravan or on a boat. For the water itself, see our guides to a camper van water filter and to houseboat electricity and water, and our portable power station guide for the electric side. For a full build, the cargo van conversion guide covers the plumbing.

If you still want propane hot water, keep the Camplux outside, on the ground or on a quay, and follow the manual. On a houseboat the Camplux manual lists marine craft among the places not to use it, so a houseboat is not where this one goes. A CO alarm inside is not optional: see our CO alarm guide.

Key takeaways
  • The Spopal 6000mAh and the NEMO Helio do not heat water: bring warm water, or use the sun.
  • The Sea to Summit Pocket Shower weighs 120 g and relies on the sun.
  • Both Camplux heaters are propane, and the AY132 manual forbids use in a camper, caravan or marine craft.
  • Fit a CO alarm if you carry gas at all.

FAQ

What is the best portable shower for a camper van?

For most vans one that does not use gas: the Spopal 6000mAh pump shower or the NEMO Helio, filled with warm water. OutdoorGearLab names the Helio its best overall and the Spopal a Best Buy.

Can I use a propane water heater inside a van, caravan or houseboat?

Not these. The Camplux AY132 manual says never to use it in an enclosed space such as a camper, tent, car or home, and lists caravans, marine craft and mobile homes among the places not to use it. Use it outdoors only.

Do portable showers heat the water?

Not the pump and bag showers. Spopal says its shower has no heating function, NEMO lists no heating, and Sea to Summit relies on the sun. Only the two Camplux propane heaters heat water.

How long does a rechargeable shower pump run?

Spopal claims 120 to 150 minutes on its 6000 mAh battery. OutdoorGearLab measured 1 hour 10 minutes, so plan for less than the claim.

How much water does a portable shower use?

NEMO says its 11.3 L reservoir gives 5 to 7 minutes of steady spray, and Sea to Summit says its 10 L bag gives about an eight minute shower. At 1.32 gallons a minute, a tester found 20 L barely enough for two people with the Camplux.
