The best jump starter for diesel van owners is one whose diesel limit sits above your engine size, because makers often rate diesel lower than petrol: NOCO does on every model, and so does the GOOLOO A3. Below are three picks that each list a diesel limit on the maker's own page and that Amazon sold new when we checked on 5 October 2026, what two independent tests say, and how to use one safely. We have no independent test of these three models, and we say so.

Quick answer

Read your engine size in liters from your registration papers, then pick a unit whose diesel limit is higher. Our first pick is the GOOLOO A3: it lists up to 6.5 L diesel, adds a 150 PSI tire inflator, and was ranked third in Amazon's Jump Starters list on 5 October 2026. For more diesel headroom take the GOOLOO GP4000 or the GOOLOO A5, both up to 10 L diesel. Use the Read more links to jump to each one.

From the road: I had a compact jump starter in the van. If your battery is empty, you can just put that thing on and your car still starts. That can be really handy when you are in the middle of nowhere. I do not remember the brand.

Why a diesel van needs a bigger jump starter

In short: NOCO lists a lower engine limit for diesel than for petrol on every model, and so does the GOOLOO A3. Match the diesel limit to your engine, not the amps on the box.
ModelPeak currentPetrol (gas) limitDiesel limit
NOCO GB501,500 Aup to 7.0 Lup to 4.5 L
NOCO GB702,000 Aup to 8.0 Lup to 6.0 L
NOCO GB150 (for reference)3,000 Aup to 9.0 Lup to 7.0 L
GOOLOO A33,000 Aup to 9.0 Lup to 6.5 L
GOOLOO GP40004,000 Agas and diesel up to 10.0 Lup to 10.0 L
GOOLOO A54,000 Agas and diesel up to 10.0 Lup to 10.0 L

Specs are from each maker's own page, read on 4 and 5 October 2026. We found no rule from the makers that turns amps into liters, so treat the limits as their own ratings. Not sure about your engine? The cubic capacity is in your registration papers.

ADAC says boosters in its test suit only smaller engines and batteries that are not fully dead or defective. That test was from 2016 and covered small units of 200 to 300 amps continuous; makers sell much bigger ones now, but the caution stands: a jump starter helps a weak battery, not every breakdown.

The 3 picks, one by one

1. GOOLOO A3: our top pick, with a tire inflator built in

GOOLOO lists the A3 at 3,000 A for 12 V petrol up to 9.0 L and diesel up to 6.5 L, with 50+ jump starts on a single charge, a 150 PSI tire inflator and a working range of -4 °F to 140 °F. It is the best seller of our three: on amazon.com on 5 October 2026 it ranked third in Amazon's Jump Starters list and showed "9K+ bought in past month". Ranks change daily, so read that as a snapshot, not a promise. It is the pick if your engine is under 6.5 L diesel and you also want to pump up a tire.

If I bought one today: This is the one I would pick: the GOOLOO A3, as long as your engine is under its 6.5 L diesel limit. Above that, take the GP4000 or the A5.

2. GOOLOO GP4000: more diesel headroom, no inflator

GOOLOO lists the GP4000 at 4,000 A for 12 V petrol and diesel up to 10.0 L, with 60+ jump starts per charge, a working range of -4 °F to 140 °F and 24 months of standby. The page lists no tire inflator. On amazon.com on 5 October 2026 it ranked 12th in Amazon's Jump Starters list, showed "3K+ bought in past month". Take it if you want the most diesel headroom without paying for an inflator you may not need.

3. GOOLOO A5: 10 L diesel and a tire inflator in one unit

GOOLOO lists the A5 at 4,000 A for 12 V petrol and diesel up to 10.0 L, with a 160 PSI inflator, a 20,000 mAh power bank and a 45 W USB-C cable in one unit. It claims 50 jump starts per charge. For a van with a flat-tire risk that combination is the reason to pick it. Check the temperature note in the safety section below. On amazon.com on 5 October 2026 it ranked 29th in Amazon's Jump Starters list and showed "2K+ bought in past month".

What about the NOCO GB50 and GB70?

We first picked these two because NOCO lists a diesel limit for each. When we checked amazon.com with a US delivery address on 5 October 2026, the GB50 showed "Currently unavailable" and the GB70 had no buy button from Amazon, only offers from other sellers. So we took the buy buttons out. They may come back; for now see NOCO's own pages for the GB50 and the GB70.

NOCO lists the GB50 at 1,500 A, up to 7.0 L petrol and 4.5 L diesel, up to 30 jump starts per charge, an IP65 case, 2.7 pounds and a 200-lumen light. It charges over USB in about 3 hours and can recharge a phone. It is the one to look at if your engine is clearly under its diesel limit and you want the lightest option.

What independent tests say

In short: None of our three picks was in the two tests we found. The tests agree on two things: cold hurts output, and a manual mode matters for a very flat battery.

Auto Bild's jump starter test (updated 6 March 2026) ranked the Dino Kraftpaket first with 1.4, the NOCO Boost Plus GB40 and Osram BATTERYstart 400 at 1.7, and named the Topdon JS1200 value winner at 2.0. The GB40 is a smaller NOCO model. Auto Bild tested at 20 °C and at -12 °C, and says a manual mode is needed for deeply discharged batteries that the electronics do not recognise.

ADAC's test from 19 January 2016 tested seven lithium boosters. None met its rated output at -18 °C and only one at 0 °C, the older NOCO GB30 fell short of its rated output at many test temperatures, and three cheaper models melted their cases in the short-circuit test. So we cannot tell you our picks beat the tested ones: we chose them for the diesel limits on the makers' pages and because Amazon sold them new when we checked.

Heat, cold and safety in a van

In short: Lithium units lose output in the cold and dislike heat. Do not leave one on the dashboard in the sun, and read the temperature limits for your model.

From the road: In Portugal it can get to 40, 45 degrees. So the bus can get so hot.

For the A5, GOOLOO says to avoid storing the unit in high temperatures such as inside parked vehicles, and that exposure above 140 °F (60 °C) may cause internal battery damage. ADAC says to store a booster at room temperature if possible, because lithium gives little energy in the cold. GOOLOO lists a working range of -4 °F to 140 °F for the A3 and the GP4000. So we would not leave one on the dashboard in the sun. Look up the limits for your model in its manual.

ADAC says every booster should protect against reverse polarity, short circuit, deep discharge and overcharge, and the Auto Bild lab checks include reverse polarity protection. NOCO lists reverse polarity protection and spark-proof technology, and GOOLOO lists spark-proof, misuse-proof clamps and a light that shows reverse polarity. Wiring in the van itself matters just as much: see our camper van wiring guide.

How to use a jump starter

In short: Follow the manual of your model, check the connection light, start, then have the battery and alternator checked.
1

Read the manual

Every model has its own steps and time limits. Keep the unit charged.

2

Connect and check the light

On GOOLOO units a solid green light on the cable means the connection is right, solid red means reverse polarity.

3

Start, then check the car

GOOLOO says to try to start within 30 seconds after pressing BOOST. ADAC says to have battery and alternator checked right after.

One more caution from ADAC: if a car does not start for a reason you do not know, call an expert. After an apparently successful jump start, ABS, ESP or the power steering can fail while you drive.

Key takeaways
  • Pick by engine size: choose a diesel limit above your engine, not just a high amp number. NOCO lists a lower limit for diesel than for petrol.
  • The GOOLOO A3 lists up to 6.5 L diesel, the GP4000 and the A5 up to 10 L. NOCO's GB50 (4.5 L) and GB70 (6 L) were not sold new by Amazon when we looked on 5 October 2026.
  • No independent test covers these three models. ADAC and Auto Bild tests show cold hurts output.
  • Do not leave a lithium jump starter on a hot dashboard.
  • After a jump start, have the battery and alternator checked.

FAQ

Can a portable jump starter start a diesel van?

Yes if the diesel limit on the maker's page is above your engine size. GOOLOO lists up to 6.5 L diesel for the A3 and up to 10 L for the GP4000 and the A5. Check your engine size in the registration papers.

What size jump starter do I need for a diesel van?

Choose a unit whose listed diesel limit is higher than your engine in liters. NOCO lists a lower limit for diesel than for petrol on the same unit, so do not go by peak amps alone.

Can I leave a jump starter in a hot van?

GOOLOO advises against storing its unit in high temperatures such as inside parked vehicles. ADAC advises room temperature if possible. Check the limits for your model.

Does a jump starter fix a dead battery?

No. ADAC says boosters help engines start with a weak battery but not a fully dead or defective one, and says to have the battery and alternator checked after a jump start.
