Osprey vs Gregory: the two brands' best-known 20 L day packs are the Osprey Daylite Plus and the Gregory Nano 20. Their makers list almost the same volume, with about 40 g between them (1.29 lb against 1.20 lb), a laptop sleeve on one and a hydration sleeve on the other. We read both makers' pages on 9 October 2026.

Quick answer

Checked on 9 October 2026. Choose the Osprey Daylite Plus if the pack will carry a laptop: Osprey lists a sleeve for most 14 inch laptops, and a guarantee that repairs any damage. Choose the Gregory Nano 20 if you want the lighter pack with padded airmesh straps for walking days. Both are 20 L, and neither is a pack for a heavy load.

How we compared them

The NomadsToolsLab team read Osprey's Daylite Plus page and its All Mighty Guarantee page and Gregory's Nano 20 page on 9 October 2026, and checked both Amazon pages with a US address. Why these two: Gregory's packs have far fewer ratings on Amazon.com than Osprey's, and the Nano 20 is the Gregory pack with the most ratings we found, so it is the fair match for the Osprey that most travelers buy. What surprised us: the Amazon page for the Daylite Plus lists 30 liters of storage volume while Osprey says 20 L, and Osprey's own page prints the height and depth the wrong way round.

David Wilkinson at Switchback Travel (updated 28 August 2026) found the Daylite Plus well padded and breathable, but says its simple webbing hipbelt gives little support, and calls the Nano 20 very similar in design and intent. On Amazon the Daylite Plus has about 3,800 ratings and the Nano 20 has 158, and Amazon's summaries of the reviews mention quality, size and pockets for both. Every number in the table comes from the makers' own pages.

The Daylite Plus lists 20 L (1,220 cubic inches), 1.29 lb and a large panel-loading main compartment. Osprey says the interior sleeve holds a hydration reservoir and fits most 14 inch laptops or a tablet, and lists dual side mesh bottle pockets, a front pocket with a key clip, a zippered slash pocket, a shove-it pocket and a harness grab handle that doubles as a luggage pass-through. It can attach to compatible Osprey packs.

The main fabric is bluesign approved 300D recycled polyester with a PFC-free water-repellent finish. The listing we link is the green one, sold by Amazon.com, with a buy button on 9 October 2026. Switchback Travel says it is a go-to for shorter outings and that for heavier loads or longer trips it prefers Osprey's Talon or Stratos.

2. Gregory Nano 20: the lighter one

The Nano 20 lists 20 L, 1.20 lb, a 20 lb maximum carry weight and padded airmesh shoulder harnesses with a one-handed sternum buckle. Gregory describes a breathable die-cut back panel, a removable webbing hipbelt, a stretch mesh front pocket, dual compression straps and a separated hydration sleeve that can fit a laptop or tablet.

Gregory lists a 40% recycled nylon 210D and a 100% recycled polyester 450D with a PFAS-free water-repellent finish, and a Limited Lifetime warranty. The Amazon listing is sold by Gregory Mountain Products and was in stock on 9 October 2026. Gregory also sells a Plus Size version, which we did not check. The listing shows no monthly sales figure, and the pack has 158 ratings.

Warranty: repair or replace

In short: Osprey spells out a repair-anything guarantee; Gregory lists Limited Lifetime and keeps the terms on a page we could not open.

Osprey says it will repair any damage or defect free of charge and replace the pack if it cannot be repaired. Its guarantee page lists what it does not cover: cosmetic wear that does not affect function, lost or stolen items and third-party repair costs. The current turnaround is 6 to 10 weeks, you pay shipping to Osprey and Osprey pays the return. See the All Mighty Guarantee page.

Gregory's product page lists the warranty as Limited Lifetime. Gregory's warranty page refused our request on 9 October 2026, so we do not quote its terms here; read it before you rely on a claim.

From the road: I've carried a lot of backpacks over the years, eleven of those years were spent backpacking through South America. In the beginning my bag was packed full. After enough years on the road you realize you don't need most of it, so it kept getting smaller. These days it's: toothbrush, basic hygiene and grooming stuff, a couple of medicines, a few pairs of underwear and shirts, one thick sweater for when it gets cold, socks, an extra pair of shoes, slippers, chargers, laptop. That's it.

Which one to pick

In short: Laptop and a long guarantee: Osprey. Lighter and breathable: Gregory.

If you carry a laptop every day: the Daylite Plus lists a sleeve for most 14 inch laptops, and Switchback Travel says its internal sleeve fits a hydration bladder or a small laptop or tablet. If you walk all day with light gear: the Nano 20 is about 40 g lighter and has padded airmesh straps, but Gregory's own words are that the sleeve can fit a laptop, not that it is padded for one. If you plan to keep the pack for years: Osprey's guarantee page is the clearer promise.
