Mexico City exploded as a nomad destination during 2022-2024. It is now the Latin American hub. Here is what I learned living there for 3 months.
The 3 best neighborhoods for nomads
1. Roma Norte (the trendy choice)
Tree-lined streets, art deco buildings, the best taco stands, packed with nomads. Pros: walkable, beautiful, great food. Cons: gentrification has driven prices up significantly.
2. Condesa (the elegant choice)
Roma Norte’s calmer sister. Parks, jogging paths, slightly less crowded. Pros: green spaces, quieter at night. Cons: still expensive, fewer nomad-specific cafes than Roma.
3. Polanco (the upscale choice)
Mexico City’s Beverly Hills. Pros: international food, secure, walkable to Chapultepec park. Cons: feels less authentic, expensive, less of a nomad scene.

Setup you need before arriving
- eSIM: Airalo Mexico pack. Tigo and Movistar both work well. AT&T Mexico is best for rural coverage.
- Airport transfer: Mexico City airport (MEX) is huge and chaotic. Pre-book through GetTransfer or use Uber from the official Uber pickup zone.
- Insurance: SafetyWing or Ekta. Healthcare in CDMX is excellent but private insurance is essential for nomads.
- Attraction tickets: Tiqets for the major museums (Frida Kahlo museum sells out weeks ahead).
Cost reality 2026
Costs have increased 30%+ since 2023 due to inflation and a strong Mexican peso plus the digital nomad influx. 2026 realistic numbers for Roma Norte, Condesa, or Polanco:
- Studio Roma Norte (Airbnb monthly): 900-1,500 USD
- Studio Condesa (long-term lease): 700-1,200 USD
- Studio Polanco (premium): 1,200-2,200 USD
- 3-bedroom apartment shared 3 ways: ~700 USD per person
- Coworking: 150-280 USD/month
- Coffee: 2-4 USD
- Taco al pastor: 1-2 USD
- Nice dinner: 25-50 USD
- Uber across CDMX: 5-10 USD
- Total comfortable budget: 1,800-2,800 USD/month
Mexico City remains attractive but no longer the rock-bottom bargain it was in 2021. Coyoacán has emerged as an alternative neighborhood for nomads priced out of Roma/Condesa – slightly less walkable but 30% cheaper.

The reality check
Mexico City is 2,240 meters above sea level. Altitude sickness is real for the first 3-5 days. Drink water, skip alcohol, take it easy. Many new arrivals try to power through and pay for it with a week of headaches.
Weekend trips worth taking
- Tulum (3 hours flight)
- Oaxaca (1 hour flight)
- Puebla (2 hours drive)
- Valle de Bravo (1.5 hours drive, lake town)
For road trips outside the city, rent a car via DiscoverCars. Driving in CDMX itself is chaotic, but the highways are well-maintained.
