Katadyn vs Sawyer is a choice between speed and staying power. The Katadyn BeFree lists 2 liters a minute and weighs 85 g, a soft flask with the filter built in. The Sawyer Squeeze is backed by a lifetime limited warranty, ships with a cleaning plunger, and screws onto standard 28 mm bottles. Both were read on 9 October 2026 straight from the maker pages, and the cheat sheet below shows who should pack which.

Quick answer
Checked on 9 October 2026. Pick the Katadyn BeFree if you want the fastest, lightest, simplest filter for weekend trips and city-to-trail travel: it lists up to 2 liters a minute and cleans by shaking. Pick the Sawyer Squeeze if you want the filter that is built to be kept for years: a lifetime limited warranty, a plunger for backflushing and bottle or gravity setups.

How we compared them
The NomadsToolsLab team read the Katadyn BeFree AC product page, fact sheet and manual and the Sawyer Squeeze pages end to end on 9 October 2026, and checked all three Amazon pages with a US address. What surprised us: the two makers do not use the same yardstick. Katadyn prints a flow rate, a weight and a filter life, while Sawyer prints a lifetime limited warranty and no flow rate at all.
Testers at CleverHiker (updated June 2026) name the Sawyer Squeeze their overall best and call the BeFree the fastest out of the box in their lineup. In a field test in Utah, Outdoor Life also put the Sawyer first and wrote that the BeFree "had the most difficulties in the field". Adventure Alan & Co. says the BeFree filters faster when new but has no backflush and the thinnest material. On YouTube, Camp Shack Productions took the Sawyer, the BeFree 1.0L and the Platypus QuickDraw on the trail in October 2025.
Our reading: the BeFree wins on speed and weight, the Sawyer wins on longevity and flexibility, and the Platypus QuickDraw is the third filter that keeps coming up. Every number in the table comes from the makers' own pages.

Read the table as direction, not as a scoreboard. Katadyn gives numbers for speed and filter life, Sawyer gives a warranty instead of a flow rate, and Platypus gives its own speed claim. The testers below add what the makers leave out.
1. Katadyn BeFree: the fast, light one

Katadyn BeFree AC 1.0L Water Filter
On Katadyn's page the BeFree AC 1.0L is a 1 liter double-layer flask with a hollow-fiber filter (0.1 micron) and a replaceable activated carbon stage. The fact sheet lists up to 2 liters a minute, 85 g, a filter life of up to 1,000 liters and 200 liters for the carbon, and says it works against protozoa, bacteria and microplastics. The EZ-Clean membrane cleans by shaking or swishing in clean water, with no tools.
The limits are in the manual. Katadyn says plainly that the BeFree does not remove viruses, that it is for fresh water only (not salt or brackish water), that the membrane must not freeze, and that you should not rinse it under running water. Its thread is 42 mm, so it does not screw onto standard bottles. Testers at Adventure Alan & Co. list it as the thinnest material in their trio and not very durable.

2. Sawyer Squeeze: the long-term one

Sawyer Squeeze SP129 Water Filter
The Sawyer page lists a 0.1 micron absolute hollow fiber membrane, 99.99999% of bacteria, 99.9999% of protozoa and 100% of microplastics removed, and a lifetime limited warranty. The filter alone weighs about 3 ounces and the full kit is listed at 8.19 ounces. It comes with two collapsible pouches, a cleaning plunger and coupling, gravity tubing, hydration pack adapters and a mesh bag, and it fits standard 28 mm bottles.
Sawyer does not print a flow rate; its FAQ says only that the Squeeze is faster than the Micro and the Mini. CleverHiker lists 1.7 liters a minute and says the filter keeps going for thousands of miles, though the pouches wear out sooner. Sawyer's help pages say the filter will not remove salt or chemicals, and that a used filter must never be frozen.

Also worth a look: Platypus QuickDraw

Platypus QuickDraw 1L Filter System
Platypus lists the QuickDraw 1L system at 95 g with a 1 liter reservoir, up to 3 liters a minute, 99.9999% of bacteria and 99.9% of protozoa, and two ways to clean it: shake or backflush. Dual threads let it screw onto narrow-mouth bottles like Smartwater, and a simple integrity check tells you if it was dropped or frozen. Platypus does not list a filter life on that page.

Cleaning, freezing and what neither removes
Cleaning is where the two part ways. Katadyn's manual says to shake or swish the BeFree in clean water and not to use tools or rinse it under a tap. Sawyer's help pages say to backwash with the plunger as soon as the flow slows, and to run a gallon of clean water through after dirty-water backwashing. Testers at Outdoor Life found the Sawyer easy to clean with its syringe and the BeFree something you can only swish.

Freezing matters for both. Katadyn says not to let the membrane freeze; Sawyer says a used filter should never be frozen, that it will not warranty a frozen one, and that it is safe to freeze only if it has never been wetted. In cold weather, keep either one inside your jacket or sleeping bag. Neither maker lists virus removal for these filters, and Katadyn says so in its manual. If you travel where viruses are a concern, our GRAYL vs LifeStraw comparison covers a bottle that does list it.
From the road: In the van, and on the houseboat before it, I had water with a water filter and a water tank. I built it myself. I do not remember the brand of the filter.
