Shokz OpenRun vs OpenRun Pro 2: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

Shokz OpenRun vs OpenRun Pro 2 comes down to a few numbers on Shokz's own pages: IP67 against IP55, 26.4 g against 30.3 g, and 8 hours against 12. Both are open-ear headphones that rest on your cheekbones instead of in your ears, so you hear the street while you listen. We read Shokz's product pages and its own comparison, checked the Amazon listings on 9 October 2026 and then read what testers found.

Quick answer

Checked on 9 October 2026. Pick the OpenRun Pro 2 if you want fuller bass, 12 hours of battery and a quick charge that gives 2.5 hours from 5 minutes; Shokz lists it as the model with wind resistance for outdoor calls. Pick the OpenRun if you run in rain and sweat or in loud places: Shokz lists IP67 and 26.4 g, and one tester found it louder and clearer outdoors. Both were in stock on Amazon, sold by Shokz Official: the Pro 2 showed 10K+ bought in the past month, the OpenRun 1K+.

How we compared them

The NomadsToolsLab team read both Shokz product pages and Shokz's own three-way comparison (dated 1 September 2026) on 9 October 2026 and checked the Amazon pages with a US address. What surprised us: the cheaper pair is the tougher one. Shokz lists the OpenRun at IP67 and 26.4 g and the Pro 2 at IP55 and 30.3 g.

The Gizmo Garage compared exactly these two in a November 2025 video (Amazon affiliate links, no sponsor stated). The reviewer found the Pro 2 better on bass but, in noisy outdoor use, quieter and less clear than the OpenRun, because the Pro 2 sends part of the sound through the air. Turning the hybrid mode off in the app gives a small boost but, he says, cuts the battery to about 7 to 8 hours. Danny Pops, in an October 2024 video, put the Pro 2 a little ahead on sound, by his guess 10 to 15 percent, and also said that if sound quality is your priority, bone conduction can disappoint.

Our conclusion: pick on where you listen. Every number in the table comes from Shokz's own pages unless we name the tester.

The Air 2 is not part of the OpenRun against Pro 2 question; it is in the table because Shokz puts it in the same three-way comparison.

1. Shokz OpenRun

In short: Bone conduction only: IP67, 26.4 g, 8 hours, no app.

The Shokz OpenRun is the older design. The Shokz page lists 8 hours of battery with quick charge, IP67, an 8th-generation sound system that it says has less vibration and leakage than the 7th, Standard and Mini sizes, a 2-year warranty and 45-day returns. Shokz's comparison adds 26.4 g, Bluetooth 5.1 and a choice of USB-C or magnetic charging, and says it suits spoken content, training music and situations where you want to hear around you. Shokz also says to stop using it and see a doctor if you get skin redness, swelling or itching while wearing it.

On 9 October 2026 the listing showed In Stock with Add to cart, sold by Shokz Official, with 1K+ bought in the past month. The listing is a bundle with a sweat headband and shows more than 26,000 ratings.

The Gizmo Garage's reviewer says it uses bone conduction only, so at the same volume it is louder and clearer outdoors than the Pro 2, with the trade-off that there is not much bass and no app to change the sound.

2. Shokz OpenRun Pro 2

In short: Hybrid sound, 12 hours, a 5-minute quick charge, IP55 and 30.3 g.

The Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 adds air-conduction speakers to the bone conduction. The Shokz page lists up to 12 hours of battery with quick charge, DualPitch sound, USB-C charging, Standard and Mini sizes, a 2-year warranty and 45-day returns, and says to use Standard if your head width is over 9.25 in (23.5 cm) and Mini if it is under. Shokz's comparison lists 30.3 g, IP55, Bluetooth 5.3, 6 EQ presets plus 2 custom, and wind resistance and channel optimization for outdoor calls.

On 9 October 2026 the listing showed Buy New with In Stock and Add to cart, sold by Shokz Official, with 10K+ bought in the past month. The listing is a bundle with a reflective strip.

The Gizmo Garage's reviewer found the bass is the real gain, and that for indoor use he would pick the Pro 2 every time. His catch: outdoors in noise it is quieter than the OpenRun, and with the hybrid mode off in the app the battery falls to about the OpenRun's. He also tried the Mini and did not like it, because the band touched his head and hair, and says most people should take Standard unless the head is very small.

Also worth a look: OpenRun Air 2

In short: The newer, lighter-frame model: IP67, 10 hours, Bluetooth 6.0 and app support.

The Shokz OpenRun Air 2 is in Shokz's own three-way comparison with the other two. Shokz lists it at 26.4 g with a frame 9% smaller than the OpenRun's standard version, 10 hours, 5 minutes of charge for 2 hours, IP67, Bluetooth 6.0, multipoint pairing, dual AI noise-canceling mics and app support with 4 presets plus 2 custom. On 9 October 2026 it was In Stock with Add to cart, sold by Shokz Official, with 5K+ bought in the past month. Shokz gives the same list price for the Air 2 and the OpenRun, and the listing has only a small number of ratings so far because it is new.

Which one to pick

In short: Pro 2 for sound and battery, OpenRun for weather and noise, Air 2 if you want the newer middle.

You run in rain and sweat a lot: the OpenRun or the Air 2, which Shokz lists at IP67; the Pro 2 is listed at IP55. You want the fullest sound and long sessions: the Pro 2, with 12 hours and the most EQ presets. You listen in loud places outdoors: the OpenRun, according to the Gizmo Garage's side-by-side. You take calls outside: Shokz says the Pro 2 has wind resistance and channel optimization for outdoor calls; the Gizmo Garage's reviewer found the microphones of both only good in quiet places. You want something newer than the OpenRun: the Air 2, listed at the same weight with 10 hours and the app.

Shokz describes open-ear as designed for situational awareness. That is the maker's description, not a safety promise, so check the rules where you ride. FAQ

Is the Shokz OpenRun or the OpenRun Pro 2 better?

It depends where you listen. The Pro 2 has more bass, 12 hours of battery and the app with 6 EQ presets; the OpenRun is lighter at 26.4 g, rated IP67 against the Pro 2's IP55, and the Gizmo Garage found it louder and clearer outdoors in noise.

Which is better for running in the rain?

Shokz lists the OpenRun at IP67 and the Pro 2 at IP55, so by the maker's own ratings the OpenRun is the more water-resistant of the two.

How long does the battery last?

Shokz lists 8 hours for the OpenRun and 12 hours for the Pro 2. A 10-minute quick charge gives 1.5 hours on the OpenRun; 5 minutes gives 2.5 hours on the Pro 2.

Does the Pro 2 really have more bass?

Yes, by design: it adds air-conduction speakers to the bone conduction. The Gizmo Garage says the bass is the real gain, but also that the Pro 2 is quieter outdoors in noise than the OpenRun.

Should I buy the Standard or the Mini size?

Shokz says Standard for a head width over 9.25 in (23.5 cm) and Mini under that. The Gizmo Garage's reviewer says most people should take Standard, because the Mini band touched his head and hair.

Is the OpenRun Air 2 worth a look?

Shokz lists it at the same weight as the OpenRun with 10 hours instead of 8, IP67, Bluetooth 6.0 and app support, and gives the same list price. It is newer, so it has fewer ratings on Amazon so far.
