Eco Hotels, Hostels, Campsites and Glamping: Real or Fake?

Some links on this page earn us a small commission, at no extra cost to you. Full disclosure.

You want a quiet place for a few weeks of work. A cabin in the trees, a dome on a hill, a clean hostel with a garden. The booking page says eco. Can you trust it? Plenty of hotels, hostels, campsites and glamping places call themselves eco. Few can show it. Here is how to spot real eco hotels, hostels and campsites. This guide takes you through it in order: what the words mean, how to check the claim, where to book, how to get there and whether you can work.

Quick answer

Look for a named certification, not the word eco. Green Key, the EU Ecolabel, Travelife and, for campsites, ECOCAMPING are checked by outside auditors, and you can look a property up on the certifier's own site before you book. Compare hotels and hostels, confirm the label yourself, and ask the host about wifi and power before you pay.

Checked on 9 October 2026.

The page says eco. What does that mean?

In short: eco-hotel, eco-lodge and glamping are words a property picks for itself. Only a certification is a check by someone else.

You land on a booking page. The photos are lovely. On a booking page these terms are mostly descriptions the property chooses for itself.

  • Eco-hotel and eco-lodge: a hotel or lodge that says it limits its impact on energy, water, waste or the local area. Anyone can use the words.
  • Eco-hostel: the same idea for a dorm bed. Some hostels back it with a certification, some only with a sentence.
  • Eco campsite: a campsite that says it looks after nature, water and waste. Some are certified, many are simply quiet spots in a field.
  • Glamping: camping with more comfort. Platforms list cabins, safari tents, domes, yurts and treehouses. A dome can run on solar power or on a diesel generator, and the photo will not tell you which.

Nothing you can look up

A named label

The name of the certification

So where does proof come from? A certification is a check by an outside party. The property's own website is not one.

How do you check an eco claim?

In short: look for a named label, then look the property up on the certifier's own site. Green Key, EU Ecolabel, Travelife and ECOCAMPING are checked by outside auditors.

How to check an eco claim in 3 steps

1

Find the label name

Look on the property's own page for the name of the certification.

2

Look the place up

Search the property on the certifier's own site. A logo is not a check.

3

Check the date

Green Key certificates run for 12 months and are renewed every year. Green Key's new process, which starts in October 2026, sends a certificate that is valid for two years, so read the date printed on the certificate itself.

Behind the word eco, seven names come up again and again. Here they are at a glance, then one by one with who checks each and what to watch for.

Who checks it: An independent entity decides after documents and an on-site audit. Run by the Foundation for Environmental Education.

Watch for: The certificate is valid for 12 months and must be renewed every year. Check the date.

Hotels and campsites

EU Ecolabel

Who checks it: Independent national bodies. The official EU voluntary label, awarded to best-in-class hotels and campsites.

Watch for: Almost all licence holders are in the European Economic Area, so you will mostly meet it in Europe.

Accommodation

Travelife

Who checks it: A global accommodation sustainability certification body. Properties go through an audit.

Watch for: Requirements cover emissions, biodiversity, human rights and fair labour, among others.A logo is not a check, so search the property on the Travelife site.

Campsites

ECOCAMPING

Who checks it: ECOCAMPING e.V., with an independent external on-site audit before the award.

Watch for: It is for campsites only. Follow-up audits take place every three years.

GSTC

Who checks it: Nobody directly. GSTC does not conduct certification; it accredits the certification bodies that do.

Watch for: A hotel that says "GSTC certified" should name its certification body. Ask which one.

Whole company

B Corp

Who checks it: B Corp certification assesses and verifies a company's social, environmental and governance impact.

Watch for: That is the company as a whole, so it tells you less about the water, energy and waste of one property.

Host-declared

Ecobnb listings

Who checks it: The hosts, who self-certify at least 5 of 10 requirements. Travelers then check through reviews.

Watch for: Ecobnb itself says it does not certify accommodations. Useful for ideas, not proof.

How Ecobnb works

Found a label? Use this short list before you pay.

Check before you book

  1. Find the name of the label on the property's own page. No name, no proof.
  2. Look the property up on the certifier's site. A logo on a website is not a check.
  3. Check the date. Green Key certificates run for 12 months.
  4. Ask for specifics: where the electricity and hot water come from and what happens with waste. A real answer is short and concrete.
  5. Read recent guest reviews for what they say about the place itself, not only the view.

And if you would rather camp?

In short: ECOCAMPING, Green Key and the EU Ecolabel all cover campsites. ECOCAMPS and Campspace help you find them.

An eco campsite is a campsite that can show an environmental standard, not just a green field. Green Key is open to campsites and holiday parks, the EU Ecolabel is awarded to best-in-class hotels and campsites, and ECOCAMPING is a campsite award.

To find them, ECOCAMPS lists campsites with an ECOCAMPING, EU Ecolabel or ClimaCamps award in Germany, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Switzerland and Luxembourg. Campspace and Hipcamp are in the table below.

Where do you search and book?

How do you get there?

In short: many low-impact stays sit far from an airport, so plan the train or bus before you book.

Omio

Omio is our one booking partner for trains and buses. Our guides to train and bus travel in Europe and in Southeast Asia cover the practical side.

Can you work there?

In short: rural and off-grid places are quiet, but wifi and power can be weak. Ask about wifi and power before you pay.
  • Wifi: ask what kind of connection it is and whether it holds a video call. A screenshot of a recent speed test is a fair thing to request.
  • Power: ask whether you can charge a laptop all day, and whether the supply is steady. Bring a power bank and a universal adapter.
  • Backup internet: a travel eSIM or a portable hotspot covers you if the wifi drops. Set it up before you leave, because remote places can have weak signal.
  • A real desk: a table and a chair you can sit at for hours matter more than the view when you work.

Key takeaways

  • The word eco is a description the property chooses. A certification is a check by someone else.
  • Green Key, the EU Ecolabel, Travelife and (for campsites) ECOCAMPING use outside audits. Look the property up on the certifier's own site.
  • Glamping is a format, not a promise. A dome or yurt can be run well or badly.
  • For work, ask about wifi and power before you pay, and carry a backup eSIM and a power bank.

FAQ

Is glamping automatically eco-friendly?

No. Glamping describes the format, such as a dome, yurt or cabin with comfort extras. How the place is run depends on the property, which is why you check for a named certification.

Which labels cover eco campsites?

Green Key is open to campsites and holiday parks, the EU Ecolabel is awarded to hotels and campsites, and ECOCAMPING is a campsite award verified by an independent on-site audit.

Does GSTC certify hotels?

No. GSTC says it does not conduct certification. It accredits certification bodies that certify tourism businesses, and it recognizes standards that match its own.

How long is a Green Key certificate valid?

Twelve months, and it must be renewed every year, according to the Green Key FAQ for establishments.

Can I filter hostels by sustainability on Hostelworld?

Hostelworld says you can search and book hostels by their sustainability certification and look for its sustainability badges. Check the badge and read recent reviews.
